  • "The Battle in Will and Way"

    03/12/2017 Duration: 27min

God has a will and a way for our lives. Continuing on the theme of spiritual warfare from last week (Ephesians 6:10-17), Chris asserts if there is a will and a way for our life, there are forces waring for it. As CS Lewis put it in Mere Christianity, “Enemy-occupied territory---that is what this world is. Christianity is the story of how the rightful king has landed, you might say landed in disguise, and is calling us to take part in a great campaign of sabotage.” Yet, as in the parable of the sower, while God may deliver the word and a revelation of His will for us, whether or not it gains traction in our lives is often threatened by the influence of worldly principles and priorities. Fortunately, we are not without aid – God has gifted us with weapons for this battle that hold the power to break down strongholds (2 Corinthians 2-10, Ephesians 6:10-17). Equally as important, he has gifted us with community so that we can encourage and fight on each other’s behalf to preserve the will and the way God has inst

  • The Battleground of the Mind

    26/11/2017 Duration: 35min

Pastor Jon opened his message by explaining the fact that Thanksgiving is a mindset, offering encouragement from Bill Johnson that you can’t afford to have a thought about yourself that God doesn’t think about you. This quote references Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Pastor Jon also explained that there is a war that is constantly waging in our minds. The battlefield in our minds begins with our thoughts, and to overcome this it’s important to fill our minds with thoughts that God thinks of us. Often, the antithesis of positive thoughts is fear. As we consume fear, it can overwhelm us both spiritually and emotionally. In terms of Thanksgiving, our prayers have the ability to change the atmosphere that we live in (Pastor Jon used the thermostat versus thermometer analogy in his message). He also referenced 2 Corinthians 10-:3-5 and summarized it by emphasizing that even though we walk in the flesh, we don’t w

  • "Relationship: From Precept, to Principal, to the Person of God"

    12/11/2017 Duration: 35min

Precept: 1) a general rule intended to regulate behavior or thought; 2) law Principle: 1) a fundamental truth or proposition that serves as the foundation for a system of belief or behavior or for a chain of reasoning; 2) a concept Person: 1) a human being regarded as an individual. Jon opened his thoughts by exploring the topic of adoption. Adoption is personal and relational.  Whereas law and principles are often the exact opposite.  To call God Abba, or Dad, is to say that God is relational.  To call Jesus an actual person is to claim God is personal.  To say there is a Trinity means that the force behind everything we see is pulling things into proper relationship with itself.   In 1 Corinthians 15, we read that the power of sin is the law.  The purpose of the Law was to help us to know we need a Savior.  The law was never meant to be the essence of relationship, but a catalyst to bring us into relationship.  We can see this from the beginning.  God creates humans to be in loving, intimate, relation with

  • "Speck Inspectors? Or Plank Pullers!"

    05/11/2017 Duration: 32min

Chris opened his message by playing a clip from the movie “The Shack”. Mackenzie, the main character, was shown a chair where he could judge others by their actions. The point of the clip was to emphasize that the antithesis of love is often judgement. Chris explained that judgement is a heart posture that allocates worth to one’s self at the cost of others. Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 7:1-6 details the fact that there are two types of judgement. An honest assessment, discernment, or disagreement God-like prosecution or condemnation over one’s inner self  Chris also mentioned that when we participate in sin we become more like the sinners we accuse and less like God. Matthew 7:3-5 states: “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will

  • "Living In The BorderLand"

    08/10/2017 Duration: 32min

Chris explained the purpose behind naming the youth group ministry “Borderland”. He describes “Borderland” as a place, or space, between places. In nature, this is best described as an ecotone, where it represents a transition area between two communities. This is especially indicative of the teenage years, where middle and high school students transition from childhood to adulthood in a short few years. Chris also mentioned that God’s Kingdom is all about love. Living in God’s Kingdom means living in the will and the way of God. Mark 12:30-31 states: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” Chris described the fact that a diagram of a triangle between God, us, and others is short-sighted because it neglects the truth that we need to love ourselves if we are to successfully love others.

  • "Practicing the Presence"

    24/09/2017 Duration: 41min

Like the church in Ephesus (Revelations 2), in our lives it is possible for us to do everything for God but not know God. Pastor Ted Howard reminds us of the necessity for us as believers and as the church to cultivate the Spirit through “practicing the presence.” By spending time with God, we remember how we are to serve and who we are serving. Speaking from Psalms 91:1-16, Pastor Ted Howard makes three observations on practicing the presence: (1) If we are going to practice the presence of God, we must have faith (2) Faith is a cultivated lifestyle, and (3) practicing the presence of God commands allegiance.

  • "All That I Have is Yours"

    17/09/2017 Duration: 32min

This week Pastor Jon concluded his series on “The Robe” with a message on the Father’s abundant generosity. Sometimes, the gospel is reduced to just our personal forgiveness. While forgiveness is part of the gospel, it is also just part of the gospel. There’s so much more! The gospel is also about an abundant life. The big idea of Pastor Jon’s message was this: “Everything the Father has, he has given to you.” We see this big idea in the Father’s interaction with the older brother from the parable of the prodigal son (see Luke 15:25 – 32). In this story, the older brother refused to celebrate the younger brother’s return. He was jealous of the extravagant generosity the father was extending toward his rebellious brother and not to him. On top of that, the older brother felt like a slave (see Luke 15:29). But God doesn’t want slaves, he wants sons and daughters. So, the father in the parable tells the older brother the truth he has been blind to: “Son, you are always with me, and all that I have us yours” (Luk
