Zach on Film: Casablanca (1942)
06/06/2014Of all the podcasts in all the world, 1942's Casablanca had to be talked about on this episode of Zach on Film. Casablanca is a 1942 American romantic drama film directed by Michael Curtiz and based on Murray Burnett and Joan Alison's un-produced stage play Everybody Comes to Rick's. The film stars Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Paul Henreid; and features Claude Rains, Conrad Veidt, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Dooley Wilson. Set during World War II, it focuses on a man torn between, in the words of one character, "love and virtue". He must choose between his love for a woman and helping her Czech Resistance leader husband escape the Vichy-controlled Moroccan city of Casablanca to continue his fight against the Nazis. Story editor Irene Diamond convinced producer Hal Wallis to purchase the film rights to the play in January 1942. Brothers Julius J. and Philip G. Epstein were initially assigned to write the script. However, despite studio resistance, they left after the attack on Pearl Harbo

06/06/2014This week, Stephen and Matthew are ready to take on the gods of thunder, lighting, and rain as they dare to open the cover of Big Trouble in Little China #1 and read the words inside... BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA #1 (W) Eric Powell (A) Brian Churilla (CA) Eric Powell, Joe Quinones Publisher: BOOM! STUDIOS WHY WE LOVE IT: BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA is one of our favorite cult-classic films because it mashed together '80s action and supernatural fantasy movies with '70s kung-fu flicks. This is the first time any new BIG TROUBLE stories have been told, and we have the film's original directer, John Carpenter, working with Eric Powell (THE GOON) on the story. You can't beat that! WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT: Eric Powell is a huge fan of BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, so the sense of humor and over-the-top action he brings to THE GOON will be all over this book. Plus, Brian Churilla's (THE SIXTH GUN) art on this perfectly captures the outrageous world of BIG TROUBLE. WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Jack Burton, a macho, truck-dri

Zach on Film: Godfather (1972)
23/05/2014This week, Zach makes and offer you can't refuse - discuss Francis Ford Coppola's Godfather, or else. The Godfather is a 1972 American crime film directed by Francis Ford Coppola and produced by Albert S. Ruddy from a screenplay by Mario Puzo and Coppola. Based on Puzo's 1969 novel of the same name, the film stars Marlon Brando and Al Pacino as the leaders of a fictional New York crime family. The story, spanning the years 1945 to 1955, centers on the transformation of Michael Corleone from reluctant family outsider to ruthless Mafia boss while also chronicling the family under the patriarch Vito Corleone. The Godfather is widely regarded as one of the greatest films in world cinema—and as one of the most influential, especially in the gangster genre. Now ranked as the second greatest film in American cinema (behind Citizen Kane) by the American Film Institute, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1990. http://youtu.be/sY1S34973zA Show your thanks to Major S
