Tonight was our session 0 for our new Runner campaign. Runners was designed by Jesse Pyne and uses the CORE RPG System, created by Tod Foley. Runners is set in the near-ish future after the onset of nuclear war. There are still pockets of humanity that have managed to survive and even thrive in this new world. Their lives are not without danger, from lingering radiation, mutated animal and people, bandits and simple lack of resources. That's where Runners come in. They are the brave (some may say foolish) few that risk everything in traveling the Burnt. Examining the interior of the lid, she's shocked to find a message embossed into the metal: "YOU WILL RETURN WHAT YOU HAVE TAKEN." She shows it to the others. Ulla comes clean and tells them about the experimental implants in her head. She was "designed," she explains, to function as a first-generation cyber-assassin for Wolfram. The system in her head is worth billions. She actually performed several missions for them -- including one that took out an important lieutenant of their enemy "The Fate Broker" and his army of "whisperer" informants -- but eventually she grew tired of their mistreatment and fled. They continue walking eastward, talking as they go. Ulla is experimenting with her new senses, mastering the use of this nano-swarm like a new skill, and becoming hyper-aware of things in her general area. Ulla becomes aware that there is a group o

Ulla and Nash clean their wounds, and everybody takes turn on watch while getting some sleep. While on watch, Nash cleans the weapons and mounts Erstlinger's gun on the base of Reggie's jar. Trae uses his watch shift to mess with the "Fred" killbot. He manages to get it online again, but without proper electronics equipment, his fix probably won't last long. Later that afternoon they take off into the badlands heading east by southeast (the direction Erstlinger had pointed). Reggie and Nash are discussing the difference between reality and memories when a vortex suddenly opens up ahead, and sitting at its edge is a military-drab 2-liter canister with a row of red blinking lights on top. Nash instantly recognizes it as live ordnance, and shouts for everyone to hit the deck. Reggie pushes with all his mental power in an attempt to shut the vortex, but instead he only manage

This adventure takes place primarily in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. It involves Dale Trever and Lilah McCormick, long lost childhood sweethearts, who've gotten back together with one another after nearly 20 years. Both seem keen on resuming their childhood romance. The investigators are hired to help facilitate this reunion but things become quickly complicated. Lilah's precise location isn't known, only that she resides in the Pines somewhere west of a village called Atsion. The girl's father does not approve of such a reunion and keeps her a literal prisoner on his property. Dark event's, which Dale is currently unaware of, lie in the couples past. He ends up telling them a lot, including bits of his life story, his diet of rats and lizards, his ongoing feud with his father, and his insistence on living out here alone (“I’ve been out here for almost a month now,” he says proudly). Eventually he passes out. The group lays him down on the floor and goes through his shit. The kid’s real name is Kenn Erstlinger. His father works for Global Nation Products as an ad sales optimizer. Aside from an employee passcard to the GNP headquarters, Kenn has an implanted RFID chip for a Carter Blue life insurance policy including drone airlift and resuscitation services (this is why he didn’t fear death), and his backpack holds a TufR LifeSaver3000 (a broad-range digital scanner and microfreq hub with 1km range). Trae and Ulla run to get into position while Nash kicks open the front door and takes a shot, knocking the one bot back several meters. Oddly, the others don't even seem to have line of sight yet -- they are moving in random directions. Ulla and Trae shoot at some others while Nash obliterates the first one with a killer shot. Suddenly a voice calls out of the darkness: "Stop! Hold your fire! Ohmygod you killed Fred!" The voice assures them the bots won't hurt them: "You're too big," he says. "They're only looking for food." Nash stays ready, weapon drawn, when the guy steps into the light. He looks like a well-groomed city dweller, trying to play bad-ass. He introduces himself as "The Terminationer" (stumbling over his words as he does so - he clearly needs some practice at bad-assery

I had the pleasure of chatting with Oscar Rios about Golden Goblin's latest Kickstarter, The Legacy of Arrius Lurco: Updated for 7th Edition. She has water and some bathtub booze, and they kick back to talk while explosions to the north verify the destruction of her old abode. Ulla tells them about her past with Wolfram, and how she fled (without precisely describing the technology she has in her head – a fact that Trae notes). Trae also recognizes the company’s name, though he doesn’t remember CRABB having any relations with them. Neither Somnambula Inc nor Diaspora Labs seems to exist in this world; there is no such thing as "DayTripping," and Ulla has never heard of SlipSpace.
