Synopsis

The goal for the SoundWorks Collection is simple; we are dedicated to profiling the greatest and upcoming sound minds from around the world and highlight their contributions. The SoundWorks Collection was created by Director Michael Coleman in November of 2009 in a partnership with Mix Magazine, several audio focused college schools and programs, and the support of the online sound community worldwide. The SoundWorks Collection takes you behind the scenes and straight to the dub stage for a look into audio post-production for feature films, video game sound design, and original soundtrack composition. This exclusive and intimate video series focuses on individuals and teams behind-the-scenes bringing to life some of the worlds most exciting projects.

    This week we spoke with re-recording mixer Tom Fleischman who worked on Director Alex Gibney's music bio doc Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown. Pioneering the journey from rhythm and blues to funk, James Brown forever changed the face of American music. Mr. Dynamite follows the journey of Brown as he escaped his impoverished Southern roots to become the biggest name in soul music, and one of the most important music talents of the 20th Century.

  • Paul Cichocki - Pixar Post Production Supervisor

    This week we spoke with Post Production Supervisor Paul Cichocki at Pixar Animation Studio. Paul joined Pixar in 1999 during the production of toy story 2 and has supervised the post production on all feature and short films since then. He is responsible for many of the efforts that take place outside of the studio including actor recording sessions, music composition and recording, international translations and theatrical quality control. Cichocki also works very closely with the Skywalker Sound team where all of the studios films have been edited and mixed.

    This week we spoke with John Midgley who is the production sound mixer on the film The Imitation Game Directed by Morten Tyldum. The Imitation Game stars Benedict Cumberbatch who portrays Alan Turing who is a British mathematician, cryptanalyst and pioneering computer scientist who was a key figure in cracking Nazi Germany's Enigma code, which helped the Allies win the Second World War. The film was shot over 9 weeks in various locations around England and we discuss the wide range of gear John uses while working with this talented ensemble.

    This week we spoke with re-recording Mixer Mike Prestwood smith and re-recording mixer Michael Keller who worked on the film Into the Woods. This film is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tale put to music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and Directed by Rob Marshall. The music and sound team did a seamless job mixing and editing the actors musical performances and we explore the meticulous process required to bring this theatrical performance to the big screen.

    This week we spoke with sound designer and supervising sound editor erik aadahl and supervising sound editor Eathan Van der Rhyn who worked on the recent reboot of GODZILLA, Directed by Gareth Edwards. For anyone who is a fan of classic monster movies Godzilla is definitely on the top of everyones list. This incredible monster was brought to life by the photo realistic visual effects and dynamic sound work that these creative teams were able to produce. We were really excited to reconnect with Eric and Ethan to talk about this film that came out earlier in the year and dive back in to the stories and experiences these two had to bring to life the monstrous sound of Godzilla.

    This week we spoke with Composer Mark Henry Phillips, who is responsible for the music and audio mix for the extremely popular podcast series Serial. Serial is produced by WBEZ Chicago and the shows Host and Executive Producer Sarah Koenig unfolds one nonfiction story, week by week, over the course of a season. We discuss with Mark how he became involved in this project and the incredibly tight production window he has to score and mix each hour long episode the night before it’s posted each week. This is an incredible example of a creative team who know exactly how to pull in an audience and make them listen a little bit closer. So close in fact that you can almost see yourself at the scene of the crime.

Mark has an incredible background as a former theoretical physicist with a doctorate from UC-Berkeley and ADR supervisor. We also discussed his collaboration with film editor Walter Murch and how they tackled this incredible story which was shot over seven years.

    Somewhere Under Wonderland is the seventh studio album by American rock band Counting Crows, released on September 2, 2014, through Capitol Records. It's available on CD, vinyl and as a digital download. The album is the band's first release of original material since 2008's Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings. The album marks the band's first release on Capitol Records. After parting with original label Geffen Records of 18 years in 2009, the band released two live albums and a studio album of cover songs independently. While touring in the "Outlaw Roadshow," a traveling festival show sponsored by the band in part with the music blog Ryan's Smashing Life, the band began to write new material. After recording independently, they shopped the album around to eight or nine labels and finally signed with Capitol. Writing of material for the new album began early in 2013 and continued during that year's summer tour.
