In the past, Classy Career Girl has given some fabulous tips on speeches. I have studied other speakers and have meticulously taken notes. Also, in every presentation, I’ve given in the last year I wrote down what was good and bad and what worked and what didn’t. Another secret to improving my speaking skills was watching videos on TED which was the best presentation school for me. I learned so much and I have a notebook full of scribbles.   Here are my tips for overcoming your presentation fears.

My Website Growth Story I have been blogging at ClassyCareerGirl.com since 2010 but it wasn’t until I really made the commitment to grow my website that I started to see the results. I committed to making my website no longer a hobby. Instead, it was a business. That was a big commitment I had to make and I encourage you to do the same. In 2015, our TOTAL page views for the entire YEAR were only 442,000. Right now on December 28th, 2016 average page views PER MONTH are 500,000 at Classycareergirl.com. How was I able to turn the traffic that I got in an entire year into now what I get in a month? This blueprint shares everything. I focused a lot on page views this year and still will continue to focus on this as my goal for next year is to get to over 1 million page views per month. As I write this, we hit another goal of most page views in one day of 31,641.

Here’s where I started. I knew I wanted to teach and I wanted to quit my job.  So I decided I was going to create a course. In the spirit of taking risk and making the leap (with limited time), I decided to not actually create the course until someone bought it. So that way I wouldn’t waste time. I mean who was really going to buy it anyways, right? I just had about 100 people in my network and on my email list so why not throw it out there and see what happened.

I want to show you today where you could be. So close your eyes with me right now and imagine your ideal workday running your own business. Imagine waking up when you want to wake up. Maybe you have some quiet time in the morning. Read a book, hang out with your children. Have some coffee. Think about how grateful you are for your amazing life. You stay in your pajamas, maybe do some work but it’s not “work” to you because you are so passionate about what you do.

One of my biggest regrets is staying far too long in a job that just didn’t fit me. I tried really, really hard to make it work and get ahead. It wasn’t until I realized that if you are actually in a job you love, it’s not tough and you don’t have to work so hard to succeed. You will be more successful when you are in a career that fits you and makes you happy. You don’t have to push and push and push. When you find the right career it just fits and is so rewarding and fulfilling. So I want to encourage you not to stay any longer in a job that isn’t the right fit for you. Don’t keep going to a job everyday that is not challenging without taking a little bit of action everyday to make a change. But, maybe you aren’t sure if it is time to make a career change. I know at many times in my career I thought I was on the right path but I just wasn’t sure. So is it time for you to make a career change?

If you are feeling stuck, I have been in your shoes. I remember what it was like when I was stuck in a job I hated (financial management). I wasn’t happy and fulfilled in my career and it was keeping me up at night. I was so stuck and I would apply to jobs over and over again online with no luck. I blamed the economy and I was frustrated that I wasn’t doing all that I was capable of. This is monster.com and it was my friend and I absolutely hated online job searching. I just didn’t fit in my job. I mean I was doing well and getting promoted but something was just off. It just didn’t fit me. The problem was I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. For years, I was stuck in a job I hated.    

Corporate Rescue Plan member, Jenna Janssen shared all of her wisdom with me in an interview about the success of her book launch last month. Thanks Jenna! You rock and I am so proud. If you guys don’t know her story, it’s just flat out inspiring. She used to be a hair stylist and suffered a wrist injury. Instead of letting it get her down that she could no longer work doing her passion, she turned it around and launched her business just a few months ago to now help salon owners and hairstylists with a book and coaching program. When I was in 3rd grade, I started a save the earth club. By middle school, I was organizing food for the homeless, teaching Sunday school and visiting local nursing homes. As a teenager, I was leading anything I could. I was passionate about youth in government, our high school seatbelt challenge and leading church mission trips. And then college happened. I studied abroad, got straight A’s, worked 3 internships and was completely confused about what I wanted to be when I grew up. I thought I did everything right but felt stuck and confused. So I took the first job that came along. I worked for a top consulting company for 8 years. I climbed the corporate ladder. I traveled all around the country. I made an impact. I was challenged. But I was still unhappy, confused and stuck. Then something changed. I started a blog, sold an online course (before I even created it) and found my passion. Would get super inspired. 8-5pm: work (with occasional cell phone access to monitor social media) Saturday mornings: 8-12pm: Blog Sunday night: 5-10pm Blog I once ran a course that started at 5:30pm PST that I hosted after work. I would take coaching calls before work (East coast clients) or after work at 5:30pm PST. I sometimes felt like I had two lives. My day job had no idea what I was doing. BUt I knew it was my future. Lunch breaks for informational interviews and partnerships and even interviews. My VA could get stuff done for me overnight so I could go to bed. “Replace Myself”

“I love what I do, but the people I work for are just nasty. How do I find happiness when the bosses are jerks?” – Rebecca It is really important to have a supportive work environment because it factors into your ultimate career satisfaction. I am happy you found what you love to do, that is awesome! But, if you continue down this path in a negative environment you are going to get burnt out. Even if you can handle it now. I know it’s hard. I used to be in a negative work environment with my client; we will call her “J,” who did everything she could to try to ruin me. She even talked to my boss to try to fire me even though I was doing work for four other people who had already quit because of her. So, luckily, my boss also knew she was a bit crazy.

Question: “Anna, What is your very most favorite “to do list” program, online? I need something to keep me organized! I do not share an office with my boss, and we do not share a server, but, instead, independent Outlook accounts. Is there something we can use to task back and forth, that will “talk” to Outlook, but is online? Otherwise, it’s just reams and reams of notes, in e-mails, attached to e-mails, on paper, etc. Thanks!” – Kris Answer: My very favorite to-do list app that I use every day and almost every single hour is Asana.com.

There are so many positives about starting and growing a membership site. Some of the benefits I have realized are the recurring revenue, the impact you can make and the freedom to go to the park with my daughter in the middle of the afternoon. But, it doesn’t happen overnight and there are some potential downsides of having a membership site too. I would know because I had to shut down my first membership site in 2014 because it didn’t really work! So before you hit go and create a membership site, let’s talk about whether it is the right move for you: You’ve analyzed your interests, strengths, and passions. You are consistent. You are a little tech savvy and can figure stuff out. You are willing to work for a long time until you hit your member goals and never give up. You want more freedom and stability. You like solving problems. You are willing to learn from someone who is the expert at building membership sites.
