The Chakana, or Inca Cross

Few artistes have contributed more to Jamaican music than Ansel Collins.  Not necessarily as a featured artiste, though he can lay claim to two UK top 10 records, but more as one of the musicians who have helped form the music over the last 40 years.  He must be on many hundreds (probably even thousands!) of reggae tunes.  And, whenever the Reggae Hall of Fame is built, he will have the right to be among the first handful admitted. Born in Jamaica in 1949, he began in the 60s as a singer but then switched, first to drums and then more fruitfully to keyboards. In 1971, with vocalist Dave Barker, he recorded "Double Barrel" for the Winston Riley Techniques label.  The tune went to No 1 in the UK and young Ansel found himself, fresh from Jamaica, in the history books and on "Top of the Pops".   The first ever all-male duo to top the UK Pop charts saw the follow-up "Monkey Spanner" miss the top spot but still make the top 10.In 1973, he recorded "Stalag 17", an instrumental track.   Collins spent the rest of th

 ARTIST of the week  on www.caribbeanradioshow.com "PROPHECY" Rohan Brown.  Prophecy stands alone, and his concern for the environment is hardly surprising. As a Rastaman, he’s long cherished Mother Nature. Also, he was born and raised in rural St. Thomas– an area renowned for its natural beauty, as well as its links with Jamaican freedom fighters Paul Bogle and George William Gordon. Real name Rohan Brown, he grew up in a family of Seventh Day Adventists. Prophecy’s early life was therefore defined by simplicity and a deep-seated sense of righteousness – qualities that have remained with him ever since, and drew him to the conscious reggae sounds of early musical influences such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Gregory Isaacs, Jacob Miller and Burning Spear. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, christened Andrew Stewart, he faced numerous challenges while growing up but music was where he found joy. Music for him began in the church and on the street corners of the various communities such as Waterhouse, Cockburn Pen and Portmore. His first recording was a track titled, Oh Mass Charlie for producer Alton Minott. He left Jamaica with a friend in 1998 for Curacao and hooked up with the band Goldie Locks and recorded a song titled Gusta Paca (This Little Girl Love Money) which was an instant hit. It went number one in Arubain 1998. Born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica. The melodic singer/songwriter Bridgett “Bridgez” Roache has had a passion for music from a very tender age. She began writing and singing in a group at church at the age of 11. It wasn’t long before the group split but Bridgez continued to write music and record her songs as demos on her computer. At the age of 16 Bridgez joined a group called “3 wishes” which was arranged by Norman Chambers aka “Doom” son of Jimmy Cliff.  She did her first professional recording with upcoming producers David “Hizzle” Hayle and Jordan McClure from Chimney Records. She recorded two songs under their label “Have Fun Tonight” And “Distracted”. Looking for variety of “riddims” Bridgez started working with other producers like The Legendary Producer “Jack Scorpio” who was impressed by her sound and decided to work with the young artist. She recorded two songs under the Black Scorpio Label “If Love’s A Game” and “Shy”. This motivated the singer to work harder and write more songs. Around this
