It's Small Brown Bike time! I love this band and saw them many times in the early 2000's (and Mike was actually one of the first interviews I ever did when I was writing for zines, remember those?) and fell in love with the band. They've subsequently released more amazing music and been active here and there when shows were a thing. Mike had been on my list for some time to have on the show, and we made it happen. We discuss his life in rural Michigan, being compared to Hot Water Music and following the flow (sounds mysterious, but it makes sense when you listen to the chat). A little bit left of center guest but a great one nonetheless is Emily Gullickson who has made her life by exploring her passion of horse racing and betting. I discovered her through a podcast called "Gamblers" where in she tells her story but most interestingly, speaks about her history in punk/hardcore. Turning Point. What a legendary band and I had the chance to speak to Jay Laughlin, who played guitar in the band as well as Godspeed (highly overlooked post-Turning Point emo band) and his current band, Honey (a rad metal band). We discuss how he views his musical legacy, how much it cost them to record "It's Always Darkest Before the Dawn" and being creative at all costs. Supporting your local scene is an important thing for ANY type of music, especially DIY punk/hardcore. Andy Franchere is an embodiment of that. He sang for the band Diehard Youth and currently plays in Ill Communication but more importantly, he is instrumental in encouraging his local scene. Andy's story may sound familiar because you most likely know someone like him, which is why I am glad to feature this discussion with him.
