Deep Space Drones

The plan is to launch a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the cape Kennedy Space Center in Florida on or near Valentines Day. If they go ahead, and that's a big "IF", it will be SpaceX's first launch from historic pad 39A at KSC since the last launch by the Space Shuttle in 2011.

Since January 8th, we observed four Asteroids whip by Earth. Anything fly by closer than the moons orbit, especially four in a row in less than a month is enough to at the very least, raise eyebrows. They are called Near Earth Objects (NEOs) Had any of these rocks hit the Earth, it would be not have been a global killer, but could levelled a city like a nuclear bomb. Even if we did have advanced warning, what could we do?

Last month, China successfully launched a new space station, the Tiāngōng 2 which means "Heavenly Palace 2". It's 47 feet long and 14 feet wide, designed for a crew of 2, with life support for 30 days.  It's a prototype, part of the People's Republic of China's goal to create a third generation space station similar to the Russian Mir space station.  The Soviet Union built Mir in space over 10 years between 1986 and 1996. Mir was de-orbited in a controlled manner.  This space station is iteration 2 of Tiāngōng 1. Unlike the Mir, this baby coming back down to Earth out of control.  That's right, a year from now the weather prediction somewhere on Earth will be chance of rain of steel. We've taken our first step, made a choice to explore space. So how are we going to do this? We could build a really fast drone, slap a warp drive on it, and hit the launch button. It might take a few episodes, but let's explore that possibility.  Another possibility is to use the tech that already exists. We have no budget, so what can we do for free? Oh yes, ask questions. Space exploration is about answering questions. Let's see now what would be a good question? Got it!  Are we alone?

So far we've explored Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, Smart Manufacturing, Future Cities, self diving cars, and the mindset needed to create the future. Since this is episode 10, a milestone so to speak, we are now going investigate how to get Deep Space Drones off the ground, and explore the possibility of actually launching drones into space.
