Who Do We Blame for This?
21/04/2014 Duration: 16minIn today’s episode we find ourselves with no show to review (A slight scheduling snafu) so we talk about what to expect if you get your show reviewed. Erik K. Johnson Been on the radio for over 25 years He’s been coaching radio hosts for 20 years He hears podcasters making the same mistakes that Erik made when he first got into radio. Dave Jackson Been podcasting since 2005 Been in the Internet since the late 90′s Check your website from top to bottom Check your audio / video for levels, tagging. Why are You Podcasting and Who is Your target Audience One of the great things that the live format allows is we can understand the reasoning behind what you’re doing. We love to help you identify your goals, and your audience. Identify What You Do Right Our goal is not to just beat you down, but to identify what you’re doing right (so you can do more of that). We will point out those items that need tweaked. In some cases you think your content is coming across one way, and we heart it in a completely different l

Engaging Life and Leadership
07/04/2014 Duration: 01h09sThe Engaging Life and Leadership podcast is  Discussing relevant answers for Christian men AND women in leadership positions.  Easy to remember – Simple to apply. It is hosted by Darren Dake and Anita Brooks. You can find their website at www.engaginglifeandleadership.com This episode features the first appearance from Erik K. Johnson of Podcast Talent Coach Things They Are Doing Well Darren and Anita have extensive backgrounds and they backup any points they make with stories and examples. They have good audio quality, and a warm and friendly tone. Overall, content is solid.  Great examples of putting each suggestion to use. The show had a strong topic (prosperity mindset) focus weaved through the entire show They do a good job of contributing to the show without stepping all over each other. You do a good job of explaining what to expect at the beginning of the show. Their website is easy to navigate, and I didn’t have to search for a play button. One Word Go Show
16/02/2014 Duration: 55minThis show will stick in my mind for a long time. It took a LOT of effort to get through this. I am not a prude. I laugh at comedians like Louie CK, Chris Rock, and Eddie Murphy (back in the day). I loved Sam Kinison. I laugh at South Park and the Family Guy. I love to laugh. This show is billed as a comedy. I didn’t hear any sarcasm. I didn’t hear an commentary on life that pointed out ironic behavior. There is (under neath it all) formulas that work in comedy and in opinion (and that’s all this is) this show doesn’t follow any of them. If you think the phrase “Who doesn’t masterbate at funerals” is funny then this show is for you. For me, it’s stupid. I watched Saturday night Fever. I watched the Wold of Wall Street (which set a record for the number of times “The F Word” was used in a movie). There was a story. There was CONTENT. This podcasts seems to swear because they want to be edgy. They have icing, but no cake. The premise of the show is they take words that have been submitted by the audience and m

Seishindo Life Tools
13/01/2014 Duration: 49minAside from the confusing name, this podcast starts off hot out of the gate and sucks you in with usable step by step advice on being a better person and handling life’s little problems. What They Are Doing Right They have GREAT titles for their episodes. They have good audio quality, and they get right to the point They are honest, and provide strategies and tools to deal with situations. Charlie does not hold back on telling relevant stories about himself (key word relevant). Technically their file was in good shape. The podcast clocked in at 32 minutes. They came in, hit the topic and quit. They have the latest podcast one click away for new visitors. poppingbottlespod@gmail.com There was one spot where Tony repeated exacly what Charlie had said. You might want to do this while recording so you both are on the same page, but I would cut it from the published podcast. Diane found the double confirmation a bit annoying. Fade the music in at the end under the talking. Add a subscribe button under the one ep

Photo Biz Exposed - The Ultimate Portrait and Wedding Photography Business Podcast
30/12/2013 Duration: 41minToday we review the Photo Business Exposed Podcast (at photobizx.com) by  Andrew Hellmich. This is a podcast for people who are doing photography professionally and are looking to grow their business. The podcast has received a ton of 5 star reviews in iTunes and I was worried about reviewing it (as I appeared on an episode). Luckily, I didn’t find much room for improvement. Here is the break down. Could Improve? At the beginning of the show there is a bit of hiss. Not a ton, and under most circumstances you wouldn’t even know it. It sound like Andrew is using a noise gate which takes the noise down to zero when nobody is talking. For me this typically draws my attention to it. Once the interview started, it seemed to go away. I like the small bit of chit cat at the beginning (I typically want all chit chat to tie in with the podcast topic, but this was brief). He then went into subscribing to the podcast using other tool like iTunes, stitcher, etc. I would move this toward the end. It was 6 minutes bef

Hilbilly Nerd Talk
13/12/2013 Duration: 45minToday we listen to Hillbilly Nerd Talk. Don’t let the name fool you, this is a pretty cool podcast that bring you news that you won’t hear in major news outlets. They are coming from the Appalachian mountains and they have southern accents but that’s where the hillbillyness (is that a word) ends. Please note I originally say they forgot to tag their MP# file but they didn’t (it just didn’t show up when I played it in Windows media). What You Are Doing Right I can hear the smile on your voice You’re delivering good content that I found interesting. Content I could tell my friends “I heard it on a podcast.” Your audio sounds good (some volume issues at the beginning, but you were mixed well). For the most part, you hit a topic, made your point and moved on. When you were done with the podcast, you ended it. You are talking about things you have passion about. Easy Things They Can Fix The music is too low on your intro. Anyone who turns it up will get blasted when you talk Change the titles of your show. If

Triangle Tactical
21/10/2013 Duration: 35minLuke is a young man who has loves competitive shooting and his podcast features news for gun enthusiasts with a splash of politics. First Impression: Website Their WordPress theme is from Cyber Chimps and it was simple and easy to read with just a few touches of advertising. You have to click on a post to get to a player. For me I would use blubrry.com or podtrac.com to get a player for people to click on toe listen to one (or more) episodes without clicking on a post. I prefer them to open in a new window for those people who listen at work. First Impression: Podcast We listened to episode 48, and the show starts off with some high energy music. The host Luke brought some energy to the microphone. For me, I hate music for the sake of music. So you could go to a site like fiverr.com and get some affordable voice over (or check out Music Radio Creative ). They had a bit of “chit chat” at the beginning that was barely gun related (but it was short). Both hosts have good voices, their audio sounds good. The b

You Suck At Weight Loss Meets You Suck at Recording
04/10/2013 Duration: 38minToday IÂ went searching for a podcast that didn’t have “celebrity” something that was truly independent. I found “Why you suck at weight loss.” The podcast had good album artwork, a title that sucked me in, a good description in itunes. So far so good. Their website was a little “spammy,” and by that I mean there are a LOT of advertisements and I really had to search to find the podcast to listen to. I could see they are using Libsyn.com for their media hosting, so it looked like this person was on the right path. And then I hit play. This is a classic example of good content, but poor audio quality. I would’ve stopped after the 30 second mark if I wasn’t reviewing the podcast. It sound like he is using a cheap headset microphone that produced a lot of hiss and a loud humming sound. When the microphone is turned off, it made it that much more noticeable when it came back on. This was not a great first impression. This lead to him playing a clip of him reading his book. It was very, very, obvious that he wa

Machine Court
15/08/2013 Duration: 38minToday we review Machine court where machine’s judge humans. This is the second time we’ve reviewed a podcast that is just chock full of creativity, and “thinking outside the box.” I love the fact that its not another comedian interviewing comedians. It’s not a tech show about Macs. It’s not podcast reviewing movies. It’s original. That’s the good news. Their artwork is awesome. Their id3 tags are in place. Their website is easy to navigate, and the opportunity to subscribe to their podcast is abundant. I so wanted to love this podcast. But in the end the one thing missing was engaging content. It didn’t make me laugh. It did make me think, and groan. This may be partly due to a lack of categories in iTunes. I see why they put this under comedy as they are attempting humor, but this is almost a drama as they put so much into the production with lavish sound effects and they really put a lot of gas into the theater of the mind. I was impressed. It just didn’t make me laugh. It’s labeled as a comedy, so I exp

Niche Down with the Nursing Times
01/08/2013 Duration: 37minToday we welcome “the hammer” back to the show after taking some time away for a medical leave. In honor of her return we have review the nursing times podcast out the of the UK. This is a great example of a “niche” podcast that is all about being a nurse in the UK. Things they Do Right They a seem to have the pulse of the UK nurse, they are putting some effort into their podcast. There are insights from the “front lines” of nursing in the UK that will have a smaller audience, but those that find it will LOVE IT. My wife is a nurse, and she loved it as it took her back to the days of nursing school. Things They Can Improve You have no album artwork in iTunes. This is a HUGE “no no” as you are blowing your first impression in the place that owns about 60% of the marketing. There are no show notes on your website or anything mentioning your podcast. How are you going to get more listeners if nobody can find it? Don’t hold your contact information hostage “we’ll tell you how at the end of the show.” Make it EA

Secretly Timid
24/06/2013 Duration: 50minMy first impression of this podcast was confusion. Secretly Timid? What does this mean? What will this be about? When I went to their website, they add lots of pictures and videos to each video posts. I searched for an “About” page, and couldn’t find one. The only thing I could find was a page that talked about the background of all the hosts. When I went to their iTunes listing there was almost no description except that it was an irreverent weekly podcast based out of Texas. If you are looking for more insights, you might check out some of their reviews in iTunes. The reviewer stated the four hosts have a great dynamics and are hilarious. It sets they all bring something to the table and they have strong beliefs and they stand behind them. The episode I listened to had the hosts discussing the Mad Men television show. They also talk about getting stuck in traffic. They share a story about ordering broccoli and having the people who served the broccoli. The “teaser” for the show is a reference to people li

Youth With a Mission
10/06/2013 Duration: 29minThe YWAM Podcast is a place for you to find out more about what is happening around Youth With A Mission in these three areas. We talk about upcoming training opportunities, evangelism opportunities and ways that you can be involved in showing God’s love in practical ways. Website The website is very white. They say the easiest site to read is black text on a white background. Its very easy to navigate, and you can easily contact them if needed. The only thing I would recommend would be putting buttons to subscribe in iTunes and a standard RSS button. Check out this video to see how. As the website is so incredibly white, I might play with adding a background color to the website. Keep the posts white, but change the background color to something that’s not white (maybe off white, gray, etc if you want to stick with the black/white theme). Audio Quality The audio quality was fine as much of it he had no control over (as he played clips or videos that he did not create). Bill did do a good job of making su

Night Terriers
18/03/2013 Duration: 19minI had the most creative request to get a podcast review. I was told they really valued my opinion. I decided to review the show. I write this with a pain in my stomach as I hate to provide constructive feedback to people who look up to my opinion. These seem to be very creative people who have not quite “found their voice.” They are obviously creative, but their efforts didn’t bring us to any release of emotions. Yes you have found the ability to add some sound effects to your voice, but much like the movies without a decent plot special effects can’t carry a movie. As you know these dogs, this might be funnier to you. As new listeners we don’t have that “inside view” into the dogs personality. Keep going, you might be on to something. What We Liked The artwork on the website showed lots of promise. Not a huge time commitment per episode (short). You sound like Hoops and Yoyo. What Needs Tweaked Change your headlines. 80% of what people read is based on the headlines. There is a chance that some of the jo

Monkey Radio with Marc
08/03/2013 Duration: 57minMarc asked to have Monkey Radio reviewed. He has had lots of press, and according to Blog talk Radio he is getting LOTS of downloads. Here is what we came up with: 1. Blog Talk Radio is wrong on so many levels, that I may do a whole episode on it for the School of Podcasting podcast. BTR is listed as the talent not you. That is unacceptable. 2. Your intro’s volume is all over the place. 3. You took three minutes to let me know what was on the show. 4. You lead story was a weird date. 5. Your co-host seems to be too far off the mic, and needs to reposition his pop filter. 6. You’re using Wix as your platform. It works, but WordPress is my recommendation. 7. You spent a HUGE amount of time on your sponsor. 8. The food segment at the end was too long, and featured information that needed to be seen. I understand its the sponsor, but we got the point. 9. Your ID3 tags are messed up due to BTR (see point 1). What we liked 1. I enjoyed the storied about the homeless. It was personal, and made me think. Listen to

One Extraordinary Marriage
04/02/2013 Duration: 28minI met Tony at the New Media Expo and he seemed like such an awesome guy. I was telling my wife about their story and podcast (it’s amazing). You can find them at oneextraordinarymarriage.com where you can find their podcast, and their books 7 Days of Sex Challenge: How to Rock Your Sex Life and Your Marriage and Stripped Down: 13 Keys to Unlocking Intimacy in Your Marriage or Happy, Healthy & Hot!: A 30-Day Blueprint to Take Back Your Health and Enjoy a Sexy Body No Matter How Busy You Are . Their website is clean and simple to navigate. At first I couldn’t find their iTunes button (they have a smaller one listed at the bottom of each episode). Their podcast is BRUTALLY HONEST (they discuss BJs in this episode). They do talk about sex in an open and honest – very honest – fashion. For Diane and I it got us talking, and thinking. The episode we listen to was about showering with your spouse. We both liked this episode, but we weren’t really sure that once they got the main topic out there that we needed

Mommy's Cocktail Hour
23/01/2013 Duration: 32minToday “the hammer” is back to comment on Mommy’s Cocktail Hour. I had heard about this podcast as it was up for a podcast award. It features four Mom’s who share a cocktail recipe and talk about the challenges of being a mom of young children. For us the highlight of the podcast was the kids, as they are adorable. They seemed to have an outline of topics to cover, but in the end there wasn’t much content that really enticed us (Saving money whne buying a purse is good content, it just didn’t strike a chord with me). This is another case that we are probably not their demographic (being that “the Hammer’s” oldest child just got married). Sound quality was OK. It is hard to get four people on a call without introducing a fair amount of his. When you are recording children it gets even worse. Their album art was fine, but they need a description in iTunes (there isn’t any). The content had us hitting the speed up button to get us through it. Tips on purse shopping and fountain drinks didn’t hold our attention.
