Drs. Eric Wisotzky and Erika Gosai interview Dr. Andréane Richard-Denis, a clinician-scientist working at the University of Montreal Hospital Research Centre in Quebec, Canada. They discuss a recent study she co-authored, Relationships between Specific Functional Abilities and Health-Related Quality of Life in Chronic Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury, which was published in the August 2018 issue of the American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. The objective of this study was to explore the relationships between specific functional abilities assessed from the 3rd version of the Spinal Cord Injury Measure (SCIM), and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) following a traumatic spinal cord injury (tSCI).

Dr. Lyn Weiss, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department Chair at Nassau University Medical Center, interviews Dr. Andrea Cheville, Chair for Research in the Mayo Clinic's Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, whose interests include: cancer rehabilitation, pain management, palliative care, and lymphedema. Dr. Gerold Ebenbichler, a physiatrist practicing in Vienna, Austria, conducted a 10 year study to follow both the structure and function related long-term course of shoulders that had been treated with therapeutic ultrasound (US) for symptomatic calcific tendinitis. His study is published in the September 2018 issue of the American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. Dr. Joline Brandenburg, a physiatrist with the Mayo Clinic, conducted a study to longitudinally quantify effect of onabotulinum toxin A (BoNT-A) on passive muscle properties in children with cerebral palsy using ultrasound shear wave elastography. Her study was published in the February 2018 issue of the American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. Shoulder pain may arise from inflammation of the bursa separating the supraspinatus tendon from the coracoacromial ligament and acromion. The optimal treatment dose and preparation of intrabursal corticosteroid injection are unknown. Dr. Matthew Carroll is on this month's show talking about his study that found that neither dose nor preparation of injectable corticosteroid influences magnitude of improvement in function or pain experienced.
