Haiti divided: 1807-1820
26/09/2016 Duration: 21minThe immediate post-revolutionary period of Haitian history was a terribly difficult one. The country was in shambles. Most of the plantations were destroyed, many skilled overseers were gone (either dead, in hiding, or having fled for their lives because of the treatment of slaves), skilled managers were often also gone, the former slaves did not want to work someone else's plantation, there was a grave fear that France would re-invade, and the rest of the international community was either openly hostile or totally uninterested in Haiti. The civil war came about because of political maneuvering. Henry Christophe assumed that he would become the ruler to succeed Jacques I. Alexander Petion, leading political figure in the south and a mulatto, had other ideas. However, Petion's folks played up to Henry, then outmaneuvered him politically. They agreed to elect him president, but then saddled him with a constitution that left him with virtually no power, all the genuine power being reserved for senate, of which

The Bois Caiman Ceremony
22/08/2016 Duration: 37minThis episode on the Bois Caiman Ceremony is intended to supply an analysis of the Haitian slave revolution which has been deliberately negative in tone. From the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, Afro-American religious provided slave rebellions with leaders, organization, and a community of feeling. During the revolutionary crisis in Saint-Domingue, too, magico-religious beliefs helped to mobilize resistance and foster a revolutionary mentality. Episode 5: The Disappearance of word "Vertieres" in France Literature and History book
16/08/2016 Duration: 52minOver the years, the original text was rewritten and changed many times. This caused Thomas Madiou’s contribution to be forgotten, deformed as well as not properly cited. For example, when Maximilien Laroche wrote an article called La bataille de Vertières et le Cahier -d’un retour au pays natal: deux westerns du Tiers-Monde, he took his information from Madiou’s work, but never quoted him. Documents written on the Haitian’s revolution covered the following subjects: the causes leading to the revolution, the French’s glory, the army of “brigands” leaded by Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the “dictatorship” of Toussaint Louverture. Haiti is part of our history, but not our memory. We all forgot how we became the first black Republic of the world, how we defeated Napoleon’s army before anyone else. We all remember that we were once slaves, but we forgot that we also brought down an army of racists. Now is the time to remember and to be proud. Episode 4: Live Free or Die (Libete ou Lanmo)
08/08/2016 Duration: 12minVertieres is the last battle, which ended the revolution against colonialism, slavery, and racism. This battle was carried by the two most radical revolutionaries: Jean Jacques Dessalines and Francois Capois, also called Capois-La-Mort. It marks the end of an inhuman and racist regime. Following in the footsteps of previous revolutions, Vertieres created the second independent Republic of the New World in 1804. Sources: Dubois Laurent Haiti The Aftershocks of History. 1791 Haitian Revolution_Our Roots are Deep and Numerous
01/08/2016 Duration: 21minThe Haitian Revolution has often been described as the largest and most successful slave rebellion in the Western Hemisphere. Slaves initiated the rebellion in 1791 and by 1803 they had succeeded in ending not just slavery but French control over the colony. Sources: Thomas O.
