Edge of Tomorrow: Live, Kill, Repeat...
28/06/2020 Duration: 01h30minWith his refusal to age and curiously immobile hairline, Tom Cruise clearly knows a thing or two about time travel. In the final instalment of our current mini-season, we take a look back at one of his better roles of recent years, the action-packed blockbuster Edge of Tomorrow. Join us as we discuss Cruise (briefly) playing against type, attempt to navigate the huge leaps in logic this movie demands of us, and debate whether the film would have enjoyed a stronger box office run with its intended title Live, Die Repeat... We've also got drinking games, listener reviews and of course our sequel pitches. Think you've got a better idea? Find us on social media and let us know! ----- Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we take a classic standalone movie, dissect the plot and compete to pitch the most ridiculous prequel, sequel or spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. See You Yesterday
22/06/2020 Duration: 01h09minWith a plot that features striking parallels to the tragic recent events that sparked the global Black Lives Matter protests, we were initially concerned that See You Yesterday might prove to be too bleak for us to talk about humorously. Thankfully, the debut feature from writer-director Stefon Bristol is as charming and entertaining as it is thought provoking, offering a thoroughly modern take on the well-worn 'teens discover time travel' trope. Initially filmed as a short, which fortuitously fell into the hands of producer Spike Lee, See You Yesterday stars Eden Duncan-Smith and Danté Crichlow as a pair of New York youths with a passion for engineering, who improbably invent a working time machine for a high school project. Being teenagers, they immediately use their new-found powers to spy on their past selves and hurl slushies at an obnoxious ex-boyfriend - until tragedy strikes and the film takes a powerful turn. To say much more would be to spoil things, but suffice to say we both highly recommen

A fast-paced thriller from Moon director Duncan Jones, Source Code puts an action-packed spin on the Groundhog Day concept with more than a hint of Quantum Leap added to the mix. In this week's podcast we discuss the pros and cons of waking up in the body of Jake Gyllenhaal, Jeffrey Wright's bizarrely over-enunciated villainy, plot hole distraction techniques and much more - plus our usual blend of listener reviews, drinking games and sequel pitches! ----- Beyond The Box Set is a movie podcast with a twist. Each week, we watch a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous prequel, sequel or spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. The Perfection 2: Encore
25/05/2020 Duration: 01h10minIs Netflix the new spiritual home of trash-tactic B-movies? We could be OK with that if they reach the glorious heights of insanity achieved by The Perfection. Written and directed by Richard Shepard (The Matador, Dom Hemingway), The Perfection stars Allison Williams and Logan Browning as a pair of classical music prodigies whose road trip across China goes horribly wrong in some very unexpected ways... Ed Wood: The Softcore Years
19/05/2020 Duration: 57minAn avowed lover of classic horror and campy 50s B-movies, it's difficult to imagine anybody but Tim Burton pulling off an Ed Wood biopic. Released at the height of his early 90s powers - directly between The Nightmare Before Christmas and Mars Attacks! - the film makes the inspired choice to celebrate Wood's spirit and sincere love of filmmaking, rather than sneer at his directorial shortcomings. The film also features a career-best performance from Johnny Depp in the title role, with sterling support from Sarah Jessica Parker, Bill Murray and Martin Landau, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of faded horror icon Bela Lugosi. In this week's podcast, we take a closer look at the real-life Ed Wood's career after he wrapped on the infamous Plan Nine from Outer Space. His filmmaking career continued, though it's probably safe to say there's a reason why his later films aren't quite as well-known... We also discuss our thoughts on Burton's interpretation of the Ed Wood story, pitch some movie drinking games an

Room To Breathe
27/04/2020 Duration: 55minWith the world in turmoil and no end to the global lockdown in sight, we're all feeling a little fragile right now. In other words, it's the perfect time to indulge in some lighthearted, escapist comfort cinema to distract from the harsher realities of post-Coronavirus life. Unfortunately, Harry made a different choice this week, so we're watching Room. Directed by Lenny Abrahamson and starring Brie Larson, Joan Allen and Jacob Tremblay, Room tells the harrowing story of a young woman struggling to protect her five-year old son from the harsh realities of life in captivity, after spending seven years locked in the tiny back yard shed of a sadistic kidnapper. Highly acclaimed on release, it earned Larson a well-deserved Academy Award for Best Actress. A feelgood romp though, it is not. Tune into this week's episode to hear our thoughts on lockdown coping techniques, who cried the most during this movie, our toughest drinking game challenge yet and of course, sequel pitches. We promise we'll have something
