THE COLOUR OF INK uncovers the mystery and power of our oldest medium through the eyes of Jason Logan, a Toronto inkmaker. Harvesting colours from the natural world—weeds, berries, bark, flowers, rocks, rust—he makes ink from just about anything. Ink is our primal medium. It has always been with us, inscribing the evolution of humanity. Working with ingredients foraged in the wild, Jason sends custom-made inks to an eclectic range of artists around the world, from a New Yorker cartoonist to a Japanese calligrapher. As the inks take on a life of their own, his playful alchemy paints a story of colour that reconnects us to the earth and returns us to a childlike sense of wonder.

In August 1990, a record store opened on Yonge St. in Toronto that quickly began serving the needs of college radio and DJs who spun new sounds far from the mainstream. Through the contagious work ethic and guidance of founder Eugene Tam, organically it became the hub for “Dance” music and the genres which emerged from under that umbrella, fueling and fostering Hip-Hop and Electronic culture. Today, its impact today on Toronto and by extension Canada is without question.

But it’s not until Aleks, an openly gay teen with a love for basketball, moves in across the street that Jake begins to recognize his own desires. To get closer to Aleks, Jake devotes himself to making the basketball team only to realize it’s not basketball he really wants. Distraught and confused, Jake pulls away until he’s finally outed as gay. With the truth in the open, Jake and his father come to terms with the reality of their relationship and expectations for each other.

It is distributed through Darkside Releasing.GIRLS WITH GUTS explores post-modern feminism through interviews with primarily Vancouver area Canadian horror movie directors. In Carol Clover’s seminal academic paper on feminism in slasher movies (which ended up in her book “Men, Womenand Chainsaws”), she suggested what was original viewed as a misogynistic format was actually a much more subversive feminist arena with final girls emasculating the killer male force in the narratives. Now we get to see how far that path goes deep into the dark genre woods, with a coven of filmmakers that are conjuring up some very sick and terrific s**t, as it’s all murder, guts, and fun with this punk-style documentary.
