  • Patrisse Cullors - How to Make it Out Alive

    30/05/2021 Duration: 01h22s

Original Air Date: January 17, 2018 Patrisse Cullors is stepping away from BLM so it’s a good time to look back at our 2018 interview diving into her incredible life that includes victories over poverty, homophobia, family incarceration, and a police force the criminalized her as a child—She dealt with all the pain, chaos and repression in her life and grew strong. She helped build and run Black Lives Matter for years, a movement that has changed the world but also led to her being surveilled and attacked by police. When we spoke she had just published her powerful memoir When They Call You A Terrorist. It’s a great, great book that tells the story of her life and the rise of Black Lives Matter. Cullors is a really special person and I’m proud to call her a friend and this interview will help provide perspective on who she is. • Nikole Hannah-Jones - I Live In A Slaveocracy

    23/05/2021 Duration: 01h22min

Original Air Date: January 8, 2020 Nikole Hannah Jones is in the news because UNC turned her down for a professorship even though she’s a MacArthur Genius grant recipient and a Pulitzer Prize winner so it’s a good tome to throwback to our 2020 interview. But what’s really going on is she’s the creator of the amazing 1619 project for The NY Times and that project is frightening to the right because it explains how America is still impacted by the legacy of slavery. It is not just our past. We are, today, a slaveocracy. The 1619 project is a podcast, a series of essays, and, soon, a series of books. She is a true genius and I could feel her genius as I spoke to her. She is a person who is toweringly influential in that her ideas have changed many people’s thinking on many issues, people including me. I look up to her intellectually and with the 1619 project she aims to shape the way people see the relationship between America and slavery. It was an honor to talk to @nhannahjones.
