Coronectomy, a procedure involving intentional removal of dental crown while leaving the root in situ, is becoming more widely accepted treatment plan for mandibular third molars. In this talk, we help define and explain the rationale behind coronectomy based on current literature. We will discuss evidence based indications for treatment planning mandibular third molars with increased risk of nerve injury based on two- and three-dimensional imaging. We hope that after listening to this talk, you can make an educated decision on when to offer extraction vs coronectomy and risks involved with both procedures to obtain adequate consent.
