After the attacks on 9/11 he joined the United States Army as a Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. After 7 years he deployed twice to Iraq and became an expert infantryman. Before his third deployment, he prayed for the first time and asked God to save his men in exchange for his life. The same day the Taliban attacked the Company Outpost and SSG Payne killed an attacking insurgent. The next day after all patrols were halted one last patrol was called for to clear out trees where he killed that terrorist.
