Police Chief Murdered In Oregon, Officer's Actions That Day. Police Chief Ralph Painter, from Rainier, Oregon was shot and killed. He responded from neighboring Longview, Washington. The shooting, his response and how it affected his life's mission. When Chief Painter made contact with the man a struggle ensued. The subject was able to disarm and fatally shoot him. The man then exchanged shots with responding officers before being wounded and taken into custody."
