Synopsis
This gets me. I hate 10,000 hour rule advice. Is it wrong? I don't know, but I can't go against my nature. And that is to embrace my polymath inclination. I declare myself to be a generalist. Today I will go over why I think it's OK to be one, what are some advantages of being one and why not being a generalist is the way of the old world. Being good at one thing will get you somewhere good—a safe job, a reliable paycheck—but being good at multiple things will bring you somewhere great. Here are my reasons: 5) “Jack of all trades, master of none” is an artificial pairing. 4) In a world of dogmatic specialists, it’s the generalist who ends up running the show. 3) Boredom is failure. 2) Diversity of intellectual playgrounds breeds confidence instead of fear of the unknown. 1) It’s more fun, in the most serious existential sense. Be too complex to categorize. Look far and wide. There are worlds to conquer. If you've enjoyed this episode subscribe to ELI20
