We concluded chapter 4 last week by looking with Ray Vanderlaan at what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. Remember that being a disciple (Talmid) is not about knowing what the Rabbi knows but instead a Talmid wants to become what the Rabbi is. It’s not by accident that Matthew begins his section on the teachings of Jesus on the heals of his call to His talmid (disciples). What follows is Jesus teaching His talmid who He is and how they are to become like Him. As we read these verses I want you to understand that they are not just a series of nice ideas – they are the lessons of a Rabbi to His talmid about becoming like Him.
