This passage is intimately connected with what he just finished sharing. Nicodemus – Has a name, Man, Pharisee (pious Jew), Follower of the Law, Pure of lineage and action, privileged, rich The Woman – Nameless, Woman, Samaritan (polluted religion), Follower of part of the law, corrupt, outcast, poor In Common – Lost, living in the kingdom of the world (flesh), thirsty, answering spiritual emptiness with worldly answers (legalism/relationships), neither know the right question to ask but Jesus answers them anyway.
