On 22 January, Sala was confirmed to have been on board an aircraft that went missing while flying from Nantes to Cardiff. The aircraft, the same Piper Malibu and pilot that brought Sala to Nantes two days earlier, had gone missing off Alderney the previous day. On 23 January, Channel Islands Air Search reported that there was "no hope" of finding any survivors in the water.
