A 5-3 majority held that a violation of Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable searches and seizures does not matter if excluding the tainted evidence would unnecessarily hurt the state’s interest in obtaining convictions. The dissenters, Sotomayor, Kagan, and Ginsburg, were correct and took the libertarian position.
