On a seemingly average Friday in the early first century AD, a man staggered under the weight of the cross he was carrying as he made his may to Golgotha in Jerusalem, where he was mocked, beaten, and crucified. As his spirit left his body, his one final cry percolated through the noise of the jeering crowd: “It is finished.” It was finished — Jesus, the Son of God, had come to do his Father’s will, and in laying down his life for others, absorbing the wrath of a just and holy God against willful and disobedient, people, he paid the price for their sin. Through Jesus Christ, sinners are reconciled to God, and this is made possible because Jesus willingly died in our stead, paying the cost of our sins. This, friends, is the good news, the gospel.
