Derry is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in Ireland. It boasts the only remaining completely intact walled city in Ireland. The Walls were built 1613–1619 as defense for early 17th century settlers from England and Scotland. To walk the entire Wall is a distance of approximately one mile (1.5 kilometers). The Wall varies in height and width between 12 to 35 feet (3.7 to 10.7 meters). The four original gates are Bishop's Gate, Ferryquay Gate, Butcher Gate, and Shipquay Gate. The Magazine Gate, Castle Gate, and New Gate were added later making a total of seven gates. It is one of the few cities in Europe that never saw its fortifications breached.
