049: Why You NEED a VOCAL COACH
22/03/2017 Duration: 21minAlthough there are a lot of resources on the internet that can educate you about your voice and how it works - such as video tutorials, podcasts, articles, online courses - there's nothing like having an actual coach who can show you exercises and ways to improve your voice that are tailored to your very specific needs. Since ever singer's voice and personality are so different, there's usually a different solution to similar problems from singer to singer. Then there are the aspects of someone holding you accountable and singing in front of an actual person whom you know will critique you - all very valuable to help you become more confident and aware of how others perceive you. 044: Lessons from the 10-Day BELTING CHALLENGE
13/02/2017 Duration: 20minWe just had an awesome 10-Day Belting Challenge in my Facebook Group "Master Your Voice", during which I showed exercises and gave a lot of tips and background knowledge about healthy belting. There have been some common issues that seem to present problems to a lot of singers, such as knowing at every point in time what register you're in - chest voice or head voice - and how to transition between the two. We answered the question what mixed voice is and how high you may be able to sing in chest voice depending on your voice type. 043: What's Your VOICE TYPE?
08/02/2017 Duration: 13minDo you know what voice type you are? If you've ever been in a choir, you've probably been singing one of the four basic voice types: soprano, alto, tenor, or bass. But if you have always believed that your vocal range alone determindes our voice type, you will need to learn that there's so much more to it. Your timbre, voice color, agility, and comfortable tessitura play an important role, as well as your expressiveness. Most importantly, don't put yourself in a box, since voice types can change over the course of a lifetime. You may start out a soprano and morph into a mezzo as you get older. 042: What's Your UNFAIR ADVANTAGE?
01/02/2017 Duration: 14minWhat's your unfair advantage? What sets you apart from other artists? What makes you uniquely you? Everyone has something that no one else has, weather it be your dark, velvety voice color, your bright and clear sound quality, your heartfelt expressiveness, your vulnerability... But are you aware of this element that makes people stand in awe of you as an artist? I can't tell you how many times I've been in the spotlight, and although I hadn't prepared and planned every little detail of my show down to the nitty gritty stuff and just usually went with the flow very spontaneously, I trusted in just being me and letting my personality shine through in a very humble way. And this is exactly what - apart from my artistry as a vocalist - has set me apart from any other artists. I just stayed vulnerable, easy going, and approachable. People love this! There's nothing worse than the diva that is never happy with the way she is accomodated, the snobby singer who won't let anyone near them, the paranoid vocalist

040: How To Master the PERFECT POSTURE
16/01/2017 Duration: 15minLet's go back to the basics: posture! Since your body is your instrument, it's very important how you facilitate all parts of it to open up your breathing and resonating space while minimizing tenseness that blocks any part of your body that is involved in phonation. Standing straight - sure, you know you shouldn't slouch over while you sing. But what about your arms, legs, hips, head, neck, jaw? If you're like every other singer, you've experienced tenseness and strain on one body part or another while you sing over longer stretches. Creating the perfect posture will give you an ideal place to start from to let your voice act freely. 038: How Much of the Way Your Voice Sounds is PREDETERMINED?
04/01/2017 Duration: 12minHave you ever asked yourself if you're stuck with the way your voice sounds for the rest of your life, or if there's actually a chance that it will get stronger? How much of the way your voice sounds is actually predetermined anatomically, and how much can you influence the sound? The great news is that there's definitely room to develop and strengthen your voice over time. However, this should be treated as a long-term endeavor, since there are no quick fixes. If you have a weak voice, you will have to train it for some years for it to be noticably stronger. And confidence is a very important aspect of being a great singer and performing artist. If you hate the sound of your voice, how is your audience supposed to love it? 035: How to Improve Your TIMING
13/12/2016 Duration: 17minIt seems to be the case that many singers are great vocalists, but don't have a lot of musical training per se, and thus have some issues when it comes to the more technical side of basic musicianship, for instance timing. Since timing isn't only important when you practice on your own, but especially crucial when you are part of an ensemble - choir or band - it's one of the skills you must work on continually in order to perform at your best. Because, let's face it: even if you have a perfect voice - if the timing is off and you just come in on the wrong count, this will be your most limiting factor of putting on a great performance.

034: The Many Problems of HEAD VOICE
06/12/2016 Duration: 19minI don't think I've had a lot of students who did not have some issues with head voice. Either it's hard to get into head voice, or it's hard to get out of head voice. Then there are the transitions between head voice and chest voice, the different spaces when singing more classical or popular music, and expanding the range to the top. Whatever the case may be, head voice is an important part of your voice and should not be neglected. Just like strength training for a muscle should not happen without also stretching, it's important that you train your voice on both ends of the spectrum on a regular basis, both high and low. Only then will you achieve maximum flexibility, strength and accuracy - and that's what every singer needs to be working on throughout their singing career. There are some facts I want you to be aware of so you can be the master of your head voice, and not let it dictate what you can and cannot sing! 30/11/2016 Duration: 21minIt will happen: you have a gig coming up and feel a cold coming on. Now what? Cancelling in the last thing you want to do, and apart from the money you need from doing the gig, there'a also no substitute you can find to do the gig. Plus, you're already on the posters and newspaper announcements and have been claimed the guest star of the event. As long as you just have a common cold and not laryngitis, there's hope! You can take measures to help your body recover faster, and your voice to not get worse. Most times, you will be fine - even if you think there's no way you can give your best. When it doubt, see your doctor to make sure you don't have any serious condition that goes beyond a common cold. 032: How the Art of MARKING can Save Your Voice
23/11/2016 Duration: 14minIn a singer's life, there are always times when there are a lot of rehearsals going on, presenting the problem that we only have limited endurance as far as our vocal cords are concerned. Especially when you're part of a big production that includes other singers, a band or orchestra, costumes, staging, acting, props, lighting, etc., you can't always sing through all of these rehearsals with full voice.
