The identity of Christ has been the focus of the Gospel of Luke thus far. In Luke 4:31-36, the power of Christ is displayed in Capernaum, showing us that Jesus can fulfill the claim that He made in the synagogue in Nazareth.

One of the main themes in the Gospel of Luke is the theme of fulfillment. Luke wants his readers to know that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the promises that God made to Israel. In the synagogue in Nazareth, Jesus announced to His fellow countrymen that He is the fulfillment of the prophecy that is recorded in Isaiah 61:1-2a.

When Nicodemus approached Jesus by night, our Lord explained his true need to him by referencing an event from the history of Israel that pointed forward to Him. The brazen serpent that was lifted up in the wilderness was a type of the Lord Jesus Christ and His lifting up on the cross of calvary for the sins of His people.
