Synopsis

Ever wish you had more than just one week per year to skip town, go nuts, rock out, and yell "Spring Break!" from the window of a moving vehicle? Damn right you do! Bobby Hazzard, The Colonel, Sweet Time, (occasionally) Stache Anderson, and all their friends share your concerns. They know you’re gonna need some tunes and maybe directions to the party. Discussions about records, bands, good brews, and other random bullshit regularly run off the rails as they stay up late and make some beer disappear.

Episodes

  • Episode 20: Spring Break '83 - Fee Tines a Mady

    23/12/2014 Duration: 01h46min

Well hey! It’s been awhile, hasn’t it? Seemingly making up for some lost time, your favorite (?) Spring Breakers show up just in time for the holiday season with a feature-length installment of foolishness – including the obligatory Top 3 lists of our 2014 "best of" records, shows, brews, and whatnot.   Also: Bobby and The Colonel got out to a killer show headlined by Paul Collins. The guys check out the "All in the Wires" LP by Dutch Masters and the "Promises" single by Barreracudas. Slacks hates moving his records, especially when they’re metal. And a shameless relapse happens thanks to a certain fortified wine that has derailed this pudcast in the past. Hint: It has a donkey on the bottle and has been recently legalized in Nashville.

  • Episode 19: Gonerfest 11 (pt 3 of 3)/Cassette Store Day 2014 (w/ Mystery Twins)

    28/10/2014 Duration: 49min

The last of our field reports from Memphis about the last big day of Gonerfest 11.  Bobby chats/flirts with our buddy Rob Yazzie (Lola Cola, Love Collector, The Fells).  Chris Eggroll relates a harrowing tale of collateral bathroom damage. Meanwhile on the homefront, Slacks Peterson hits up a Cassette Store Day party over at Fond Object.  There, he talks to Doug and Steph of Mystery Twins who dropped the "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" EP on tape for the occasion.  He also catches up with Ryan Sweeney (Cheap Time, Hans Condor) to discuss record digging and whatnot.

  • Episode 18: Gonerfest 11 coverage, pt 2 of 3 (w/ Ben Lyon)

    06/10/2014 Duration: 44min

Bobby Hazzard and The Colonel are rolling around Memphis with Nashville crony Chris Eggroll on Day 2 of Gonerfest.  Slacksless Peterson continues to hold it down at the home studio, anchoring the podcast and trying to make sense of the incoming field reports.  Bobby chats with BEN LYON - frontman of The Hemingers/the illustrator responsible for the cover art on tons of records you know and love.

  • Episode 17: Gonerfest 11 coverage, pt 1 of 3 (w/ Orville Neely and Cool Runnings)

    30/09/2014 Duration: 51min

The guys take a Spring Break weekend in Memphis for the eleventh round of Gonerfest, and it's going to take a trilogy of episodes to fill y'all in on the awesomeness. Here in the first round we've got interviews with New Zealand punk rock quartet COOL RUNNINGS and also ORVILLE NEELY of Bad Sports, OBN IIIs, James Arthur's Manhunt, etc. Plus a breakdown of the bands that played the first day of Gonerfest. Hang in there for a little late-night unplugged jam that the Cool Runnings dudes laced us with!

  • Episode 16: Spring Break '91 - Life Is a Highway

    24/09/2014 Duration: 59min

Gettin' ready to hit that highway to Memphis for a weekend of bands, BBQ, and brews!  But in the meantime, we've got records: Glammy goodness on the latest King Tuff LP.  Iconic hair metal from Icon.  A country 45 by a kid who sounds like Butters from South Park.  Some sweet power pop scores by a band called Zeus.  And a dollar-bin diamond that panders to Nashvillian civic pride. PLUS: Malt liquor time with Bobby Hazzard.  The Colonel is still on the pumpkin beer train, and yes, he brought a whoopee cushion.  Slacks Peterson wears pants, and compared to previous hosts, seems less concerned with snacks and/or moustaches.

  • Episode 15: Spring Break '81 - All My Rowdy Friends

    15/09/2014 Duration: 01h22min

How would you assess your own level of football preparedness, and what beer best represents your favorite NFL team?  Bobby hates the outdoors, even when rock n' roll is involved.  The Colonel attends a regional beer festival and won't shut up about it.  Snacks Anderson crop dusts a busload of European tourists at a winery.  The guys sample half a dozen pumpkin beers because it's almost fall.  A whoopee cushion fills in for the Fartman 9000 and tries to derail the show.  Mrs. Hazzard stops by to keep an eye on things. Oh, and there are also records to discuss!  New 45s by Games, Missing Monuments, and a dollar bin diamond by The Beach-Nuts.  New albums from Paul Collins, The Yolks, and an 80s cowpunk gem by The Joneses.  (So filthy!)

  • Episode 14: Spring Break '97 - Return of the Mack

    02/09/2014 Duration: 01h02min

Your spring break budz have been seeing all sorts of live music lately.  Discussion of recent shows featuring Queensryche, Black Irish Texas, Leo Rondeau, and Slushy is in order.  Records of distinction this time around include the Witchboard soundtrack, suggestive new wave by Sue Saad & The Next, and pimpin' old 45 by Alvin Cash. PLUS: Snacks got his snack on.  The Colonel paints pictures with his hole, his words, and/or his word-hole.  Bobby is terrible with words.

  • Episode 13: Spring Break '90 - Seasons in the Abyss

    26/08/2014 Duration: 01h25min

This show is lucky number thirteen, and our spring break soundtrack takes a very dark turn this week.  Bobby pulls some 70s proto-metal by Jerusalem, some mid 80s fantasy metal by Omen, and a mid 90s gem by metal stalwarts Pentagram.  Snacks praises the gloomy synth-punk of Digital Leather.  The Colonel's picks include bummer pop by The Dutchess & The Duke and the malevolent raps of Earl Sweatshirt.  Of course, there is discussion of SLAYER.  (Are they the Ramones of speed metal?)  Even our beers are dark this time.  Will evil forces prevail in dampening the good time of your Spring Break Budz?  Or will tasty brews, tasteless jokes, and corny sound effects be sufficient to keep any bad vibes in check?

  • Episode 11: Spring Break '88 - Smooth Up In Ya

    05/08/2014 Duration: 52min

Never mind the hair metal title, the focus of this episode is power pop! We’ve got brand new stuff by Ramma Lamma and Winter Bear, overlooked classics by Phil Seymour and Dick Coulson & Letter O, plus contemporary stuff from The Baseball Project – a group comprised of some heavy hitters from 80s/90s alternative rock. Bobby does a lightning round recap of the best beers he tapped in Dallas, and the guys check out a refreshing local summer brew from Jackalope.   Plus: Snacks-less cracks over lack of snacks. Shitty pigeons. Ted fucking Williams! WELLER!!!

  • Episode 10: Spring Break '88 - When the Children Cry

    29/07/2014 Duration: 54min

In another dubious attempt to refine the podcast with classier beverages, The Colonel mixes a cocktail from an internet recipe to kick off the show.  (Spoiler alert: the main ingredient is leftover Spodee wine.)  The new OBN IIIs LP is a Tic-Tac-Total rocker.  Bobby throws on the newest Ausmuteants single and mentions their early cassette release which has recently been reissued on 12" wax.  Snacks dug up some sweet 45s by The Flirts (new wave 80s ladies) and Frenzy (mid 70s UK glam).  In the beer segment, The Colonel runs down some exotic road beers sampled in Asheville and DC, and Bobby pours up a fine IPA by Dogfish Head. Plus: A listener question regarding "regular guy beer" is fielded.  Snacks and Bobby swap war stories about injuries at Jesus Lizard shows.  The Colonel outs Snacks's longtime membership in the Pen15 Club.  And much like the White Lion monster ballad that bears the same name as this episode, Bobby gets "solemn as fuck."

  • Episode 9: Spring Break ’91 – Here Comes the Hammer

    22/07/2014 Duration: 01h16min

"Number nine, number nine, number nine…" Bobby attempts to add some much-needed class to spring break by kicking off the show with a wine tasting. But when that wine comes in a half-liter bottle with a picture of a donkey on it, Snacks is skeptical and The Colonel threatens to go full wino.   And since 9 is the magic number this time around, nine super-solid records get discussed and reviewed: 1) new Radioactivity 7" on Secret Mission 2 & 3) Essential Texas punk reissue 7"s by Bobby Soxx and The Next, both from Cheap Rewards. 4) wand-wielding-but-skateboard-friendly British 80s metal reissue by Satan. Roll for damage! 5) latest Steve Adamyk Band LP "Dial Tone" (produced by Matthew Melton) 6) sophomore album and first U.S. release from Vancouver hellraisers Needles//Pins 7) Neil Merryweather "Space Rangers" awesome 70s concept LP 8) Tuff Darts! LP, late 70s gold-grill power-pop punk rock, and 9) early 80s Japanese rock LP by Sheena & The Rockets   Also: Bobby and Snacks saw Paul Collins. Snacks and The

  • Episode 8: Spring Break '84 - Tonight Is What It Means to Be Young

    08/07/2014 Duration: 01h21min

Summer is here, good jams are coming from all directions, and the search for this year's perfect hot weather beer is on!  It's a lovely season to try out some wheat beers, shandies, and/or session ales as the guys run down 45s by Mac Blackout, Mary Monday & the Bitches, and The Crypt Keeper, plus LPs by The Shivvers, Pookie & the Poodles, and Warm Soda.  You might need at least a 6-pack to make it through the Styx album featured in this installment of Bobby's Crap Corner.  And you may wonder if your drink was dosed when you check out the psychedelic stylings of a certain Frankie Valli 45 that The Colonel has deemed to be a dollar bin diamond. Also in this episode: The Colonel attempts to deliver a "state of the podcast" address, and in true spring break fashion is made to drink during this speech.  Stache(less) decides he would now like to be referred to as "Snacks Anderson."  Bobby's obsession with the movie "Streets of Fire" extends to Jim Steinman's excesses in the soundtrack.  The Colonel makes re

  • Episode 7: Spring Break '84 - Careless Whisper

    01/07/2014 Duration: 58min

Show #7 is lucky in that many records get reviewed with minimal derailment.  Stache(less) brings in a Wildman Steve LP with such a wonderful cover that discussion of the record's contents is completely unnecessary.  The Colonel reviews four new Guided By Voices singles from the "Cool Planet" LP and brings in a surprise celebrity 45 that prompts discussion of the recorded outputs of Clint Eastwood, Jack Palance, and Burt Reynolds.  Bobby covers the Slint box set, a Half Japanese 7" on Joyful Noise, Mother's Children "Lemons" LP, the Creepshow soundtrack reissue, and a split 12" with Destruction Unit, Milk Music, and Merchandise.  Black Abbey Champion and Founder's All Day IPA are tasted in this week's beer reviews. Plus: Is Bobby Hazzard having a mid-mailbox crisis?

  • Episode 6: Spring Break '14 - Record Store Day 2014

    24/06/2014 Duration: 55min

This debriefing on "record nerd Christmas" is better late than never, right?  Bobby and The Colonel hit Memphis for Record Store Day this year to score some special releases from New Zealand and enjoy some local brews from the Bluff City.  Stache(less) held things down in Nashville, eschewing the long shopping lines in favor of free beer and live bands.  RSD releases getting the nod include LPs by Spelling Mistakes, The Scavengers, La De Da's, Pagans live, retrospectives of Idle Race and The Moles, 7"s by Nirvana, Ron Jeremy, Milk & Cookies, Devo/Flaming Lips and Sonics/Mudhoney split 7"s, Dinosaur Jr. 7" box set, and "1990 Bronx Warriors" and "Last House on the Left" soundtrack LPs. PLUS: This episode marks the maiden recording from the new Total BS Headquarters at Stately Hazzard Manor, nestled somewhere in the Bobbywood Hills.  The Colonel suspects some of his "residual fanciness" may be influencing Stache(less).  Jerry Lawler is fingered as a suspect in the unsolved mystery of who let the dogs out.  A
