Called to Suffer Unjustly (1 Peter 2:18-25)
11/02/2021Series: 1 Peter (Living in Exile)Service: Sun AMType: SermonSpeaker: Scott KerchevilleThe past year has opened our eyes to the darkness in the world around us and as such we have talked about how to think about injustice from a lot of different perspectives. We have talked about how the evil gods of the divine council are the powers behind it all. We have talked about how we ought to hope in God to judge these gods and the powers that be. We have demonstrated through John the Baptizer how we wait until the fullness of Jesus’ kingdom for final justice. We have talked about how we can show love to…

Living Between the Advents (Luke 7:18-23)
11/01/2021Series: The Gospel and the KingdomService: Sun AMType: SermonSpeaker: Scott KerchevilleThe more you read Isaiah the more it becomes apparent that he probably addressed many of his oracles to various leaders in Jerusalem — priests, prophets, princes, kings, judges and rulers. From Isaiah’s perspective, a large part of what is wrong in Jerusalem and in the world is a top down problem. Unjust laws and judgments were cast by judges and rulers (Isaiah 10:1-2). Priest and prophet were full of alcohol (Isaiah 28:7-8). It should be no surprise then that a large portion of the promises Isaiah offers are also top down solutions. God would come in judgment. A king…

The Wrath of God (Romans 1:18-32)
14/12/2020Series: N/AService: Sun AMType: SermonSpeaker: Scott KerchevilleNotice Acts 24:24-25. Paul was on trial before the governor Felix. Felix was not a follower of Jesus, but he knew plenty about this Jesus following. Despite this, notice what happens when he visited with Paul one day. “After some days Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, and he sent for Paul and heard him speak about faith in Christ Jesus. And as he reasoned about righteousness and self-control and the coming judgment, Felix was alarmed and said, ‘Go away for the present. When I get an opportunity I will summon you.’” (Acts 24:24–25 ESV) Felix knows…

Subject to Caesar (1 Peter 2:13-17)
14/12/2020Series: 1 Peter (Living in Exile)Service: Sun AMType: SermonSpeaker: Scott KerchevilleFor thousands of years people have lived under the mediocre and often oppressive reigns of the kings of earth. But the prophets have promised for a long time that a trustworthy king will come to truly do justice. And he has finally come — Jesus Christ. When the first Christians gave their worship and allegiance to Jesus and his kingdom, the world quickly realized that the reign of King Jesus rivaled the reign of Caesar. Jesus was building an unstoppable Kingdom, inheriting the nations and instructing all kings to bow before him, but that’s what Caesar was trying to do…

Judging the Injustices of the Gods (Psalm 82)
03/11/2020Series: Psalms (Worshipping God)Service: Sun AMType: SermonSpeaker: Scott Kercheville*Though the sermon does not address the relationship between Psalm 82 and John 10, here are a few notes to consider*God has taken his place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods he holds judgment: “How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? (Selah) Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” They have neither knowledge nor understanding, they walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are…

Glorifying God As Exile in a Hostile World (1 Peter 2:11-12)
02/11/2020Series: 1 Peter (Living in Exile)Service: Sun AMType: SermonSpeaker: Scott Kercheville(English)As Moses explained God’s instructions to Israel in Deuteronomy, he motivated them to obey by telling them what God was planning to accomplish through their obedience. Deuteronomy 4:6–8 ESV, “Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? And what great nation is…
