Synopsis

Being an adult is hard. So is being a geek. And an adult geek? Well, that's where we come in. We're Beej and Void, and we've got more than a little experience in that area. We are life-long geeks and have managed to bring our geekery with us into adulthood and still be somewhat functional adults--you know, with families and jobs and that sort of thing. We don't do toxic, and we don't do nerdrage. Our views on geekdom are positive and optimistic, and we believe that the most important part of being a geek is the people you get to geek out with.Tightly focused discussions on specific topics drive the show. Striving to illustrate that it is entirely possible to be mega-geeks and responsible adults, we want to be your friend and create and open and positive geek community for everyone. We started this podcast because we really want there to be a safe, welcoming, positive geek community for everyone. We want to talk about stuff we love, make friends, and most importantly, make sure that everyone feels appreciated and that there's a place for them. So whether your love is video games, comic books, movies, TV, fitness, computers and tech, or whatever else...come geek out with us. Let's be friends.

  • S4E19 - Story Endings - “Swords and Shields and Way Too Much Magic”

    16/05/2019 Duration: 01h02min

Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks! In This Episode: We discuss story endings, especially with all the big endings happening this year like Star Wars, Avengers Endgame, Game of Thrones, and more.  BJ pulls out some of his professor skills to let us know a little bit more about what makes for a good, bad, or interesting ending. For geekery, Beej has been playing FFXII on Switch, Dragon Quest IX on DS, and is still totally into the Wheel of Time series.  Void finished the Shovel Knight Boss Fight Books novel, War of the Spark: Ravnica novel, and has even more thoughts about MTGA including what it’s doing right to incentivize players to play. • S4E18 - SteamWorld Quest - "Cards are an aesthetic"

    09/05/2019 Duration: 53min

In This Episode: We cover a quick main topic of SteamWorld Quest and then jump into an extra long Weekly Geekery since we skipped it for our Avengers Endgame spoilercast last week.   In short, the SteamWorld games are pretty fantastic. They take a steampunk look and put the robots and cogs and gears into different settings.  SteamWorld Dig is a western, SteamWorld Heist is in space, and now SteamWorld Quest is medieval fantasy. They all work so incredibly well that you almost forget you're playing with silly robots. SWQuest itself is a card-based RPG based on deckbuilding, but it does not play like that. The cards themselves are basically just facades for abilities you learn and choose from, and the re-draws are essentially just cooldowns you get every turn. The game's story is nothing special, but the graphics are beautiful, and the gameplay is far, far, far better than we had expected. If you're looking for a fun, cheap RPG on the Nintendo Switch (and who isn't?), you could do a lot worse than SteamWorld Qu

  • S4E17 - Avengers Endgame Spoilercast - “Emotionally Devastated in Different Ways”

    02/05/2019 Duration: 45min

Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks! In This Episode: We have a spoiler-filled discussion about Avengers Endgame. Like a lot of spoilers. Spoilers on top of spoilers.  We even manage to throw some extra spoiler discussion at the end about Game of Thrones Season 8. But even the GoT stuff is right at the very end, we warn you, and you can totally skip out on it if that's not your thing. And when we say spoilers, we mean it. We don't do Weekly Geekery in this episode because we don't want to take the chance on spoiling Endgame for anyone at all. Next week, we'll be back with extra geekery (and a fun discussion of SteamWorld Quest as our main topic). But in the meantime...we're in the Endgame now. So let's talk about that. • S4E16 - Star Wars Episode IX Trailer - “Jedi Backflips”

    25/04/2019 Duration: 01h13s

Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks! In This Episode: We discuss the Star Wars Episode IX trailer and our hype for the final entry in the Skywalker saga.  You have heard us talk a lot about Star Wars in the past, and we thought you'd like to hear this, too. Instead of going into a lot of detail here in the notes, you absolutely need to listen and get in on the geeking out. Weekly Geekery For geekery, Beej is playing lots of RPGs at the same time, he’s still listening to Skyward, and has gotten back into running in a big way. Void played some Clank with his kids, is replaying Cuphead now that it’s out on the Nintendo Switch, is still very hooked on Magic The Gathering Arena, and is listening to a ton of the MTG podcast called Magic The Gathering Drive To Work. • S4E15 - Magic The Gathering & #MTGArena - “Sad Tacos”

    18/04/2019 Duration: 01h05min

Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks! In This Episode: We discuss Magic: The Gathering and the new(ish) Magic: The Gathering Arena PC game. We wanted to do this primarily so that we could tackle the subject from the perspective of someone who is pretty new to the game (Void), as well as someone who has a lot of experience with MTG that dates back to the late 90s (Beej). Void has always been Magic-adjacent, having a brother who played and knowing the very basics of how the game worked. For a number of reasons, he never could quite get into the game. One of the main ones being that it is a physical CCG, and he's not too much of a collector of physical items. And really, that's MTG's whole shtick. You buy booster packs of random cards, hoping for something awesome. If not, you sell it or trade it so you can get something awesome. But either way, you have physical pieces of cardboard in your possession. With the release of Magic: The Gathering Arena (think Hearthstone but made by Wizards of the Coast...and, you know,

  • S4E14 - Video Game Remasters - “Remasters of the Universe”

    11/04/2019 Duration: 01h06min

Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks! In This Episode: We discuss remasters in all shapes and sizes including the good and the bad.   We wanted to talk about this because Void is working through the remaster of Assassin's Creed 3, and it gave him a lot of thoughts about how the new games have a lot more going for them than he really expected. Going back shows the improvements the series has made. That said, we discuss whether all remasters are good, bad, or even necessary. The Final Fantasy series has been remastered up and down, left and right, and some are great, and others are not so good.  We also talk about how the remasters of the FF games is because SquareEnix lost the source code to a number of their games over the years. That's why some of the remasters are such a mixed bag, and why some of the graphics are kind of hit and miss. Plus, it's why we have no Final Fantasy VIII remaster or port -- they simply don't have the code. You can read more about that here: https://www.vg247.com/2018/09/14/isnt-ps4-xbo

  • S4E13 - Impulse Buys - “Thor Vindication”

    04/04/2019 Duration: 59min

Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks! In This Episode: We discuss impulse buys both good and bad along with how they’ve changed for us over time.   We tend to buy impulsively in different ways. For Beej, it's AAA games, and he tends to regret them. Void, on the other hand, gets a lot of enjoyment out of being in that initial wave of sales and being able to talk, so even when he impulse buys something, he can get his money's worth out of it even if he stops playing it soon. We both feel as though our houses are impulse buys, which is kind of crazy when you think about it...because they're houses. We just have a really good discussion about all sorts of awesome stuff and the workings of our brainyparts. And you know that you want to dig in there with us. Weekly Geekery In this week’s geekery Beej talks more about his MCU rewatch and got to play his first game of Settlers of Catan.  Void impulse bought a bunch of board games to play with his kids and has been reading Skyward by Brandon Sanderson and Final Fantasy Lo

  • S4E12 - Superhero Burnout - “Let creators do their thing”

    28/03/2019 Duration: 59min

Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks! In This Episode: We discuss superhero burnout and how we’re feeling about the upcoming MCU (and non-MCU) movies that are on the horizon.   BJ is in the middle of an MCU rewatch, and is currently not too burned out. At least on movies. TV shows are a different story, and so are the DC movies, to be fair. It's really just Marvel movies that he's currently excited about, and that's because we are getting the culmination of the past 11 years in a few weeks. Void, on the other hand, wonders if he will see many more of them in the theater versus waiting for home release, but as we dig further, it turns out that his kids are finally hitting the age where they want to go and see them because they are just beginning to see the movies. We discuss the idea that every Marvel movie at this point is someone's first Marvel movie, and that changes the way we have to look at it. While we have 11 years of backlog and burnout buildup, newcomers are excited that they have that decade of content

    14/03/2019 Duration: 01h10min

Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks! In This Episode: We talk about the LitRPG genre of books in a listener-sponsored episode from Patreon!  Thanks for the idea and the support of the podcast Ken Murray! If you've never heard of the genre, that's okay! We dig into what makes up the LitRPG genre, and how it's kind of a subgenre of the GameLit category that's popped up over the past few years. In general, it is a little hard for us to define the genre in specific terms. The best we can really lay out (aside from the books that we talk about in this episode) are Sword Art Online, .hack, and maybe Ready Player One.  After we stopped recording, Beej thought about potentially For the Win by Cory Doctorow, but still...that's a little different. And so is REAMDE by Neal Stephenson. They're at the very least LitRPG-adjacent. General Thoughts on LitRPG We both generally like the genre, and the books Ken got to us were chosen specifically for our tastes. Void got Dungeon Born by Dakota Krout, and Beej read Ascend Online by

Weekly Geekery We do, however, talk about some cool stuff in geekery this week. We discuss seeing Renee Elise Goldsberry in concert, the Golden Retriever hero unit in Wargroove, and how Cosmic Star Heroine is Beej's first Platinum trophy on PSN. Void Apes Out in style, briefly discusses Anthem, and tells Beej about the cool stuff that Apex Legends is doing...and why he'd still probably hate the game. • S4E8 - Void is Back - “!?”

    28/02/2019 Duration: 19min

Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks! In This Episode: Void is back!  BJ is… not!? In this episode, Void has finally returned to the land of the living after a much-maligned absence by the Geek to Geek Community.  Unfortunately, Beej's wife had a bad reaction to an allergy test, and he had to do his husbandly duties and pick her up and make sure she didn't die (spoiler: she didn't). She did, however, impress the nurses by being the only patient they've ever had who snored when she passed out. So points for that. The silver lining here is that you wonderful human beings out there get to listen to Void's soothing vocal tones podcast their way into your ear canals. We know you've missed him (we have, too!), so we wanted to make sure that since he had a podcasting station for the first time in a long time, he sat down in front of a mic and said hello.  So hit play, geeks, and say hello. • S4E7 - Nintendo Direct - "It looks like if The Legend of Zelda invaded the Island of Misfit Toys"

    21/02/2019 Duration: 29min

Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks! In This Episode: Beej is solo this week. Not for a lack of trying. Void's life got twist turned upside down, and the schedule for us to get back on schedule was pushed back. Then Beej's internet decided that it didn't want to stay connected for more than a few minutes at a time, making recording an episode with a guest impossible. Stupid thunderstorms making the power blink. Regardless, we've got an episode in your feed covering the talk of the geeks: last week's Nintendo Direct. Oodles of Cool Stuff from Nintendo The Nintendo Direct on February 13th was chock-full of content that shows 2019 as being potentially the best year yet for Nintendo's portable console. Between Yoshi's Crafted World (whose demo is amazeballs), Fire Emblem Three Houses (which looks to change up the formula the series has stuck with to this point), and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (it's so pretty!)...the Switch has a lot going for it. Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker is getting some DLC, which

    14/02/2019 Duration: 01h08min

Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks! In This Episode: Katie from the Tea Time podcast joins Beej because Void is still being attacked by life. One day, the man will roll high enough to break free. Maybe next week. Regardless, Katie and Beej have a rousing good time, and they discuss why and how their love of all things pop culture led them to where they are today.  Katie started with Harry Potter and fell deep into fandom from there. She eventually ended up podcasting and blogging for Temple of Geek, even attending cons under their press pass credentials. It was pretty sweet. But life happened, and something amazing came from it... Tea Time with Katie and Chelsea! Her current podcast, Tea Time with Katie and Chelsea, was born from still loving pop culture, having things to say about it, and having the perfect partner in Chelsea to do so. Chelsea recently told her, however, that Katie should do a minisode on Supernatural's 300th episode alone. Because she doesn't know anything about it. So much for the perfect pa

    07/02/2019 Duration: 01h12min

Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks! In This Episode: Void is still missing! Austin joins Beej again to talk about a series that means a lot to both of them: Kingdom Hearts. KH3 has finally released. After thirteen years of waiting, and nearly 18 since the series' debut, we have our grubby little hands on the final installment of the mainline Kingdom Hearts games. The real question, though, isn't necessarily whether it's good or not. That's almost beyond the point. The real question we have to ask ourselves as fans of the series is... Was KH3 Worth the Wait? Even that, however, is a hard question to answer because it hasn't been 13 years since the release of any Kingdom Hearts game. Only the numbered, mainline ones. We've had a slew of releases like Birth by Sleep (which might as well have been renamed Kingdom Hearts Zero), Dream Drop Distance, re:Coded, Chain of Memories, and so on.  We haven't necessarily missed them, but there hasn't been a primary console release since KH2. The others were all handhelds, exc

He is going to be blogging on the Geek to Geek site about playing through all of the Dragon Quest games this year, so we thought it would be a great time to bring him on the show to talk about the series. After discovering a love for DQ with the Dragon Quest Heroes games, DQXI grabbed both Austin and Beej and reeled them in hard. Without any previous mainline game experience, Austin decided to get the PS4 platinum trophy. By then he was hooked and was jonesing for as much DQ as he could get.  Dragon Quest XI - What's So Good About It We discuss at great length at why Dragon Quest XI stands out from so many other JRPGs, and why the game itself just works. Right now, it's a very traditional DQ game, but is honestly one of the most accessible RPGs out right now. There is true turn-based combat, a fantastic character named Sylvando you're going to love, and a lot of

In order to talk with his nephew, Beej got into Pokemon again, too. It was a pretty big break, and there was a lot of stuff to cover. Void dived deep into Read Dead Redemption 2, but still isn't 100% sure how he feels about it. It's not quite...fun. It's good? Beej adores Persona 5, and he wonders exactly why he waited so long to get into it. The social links...wow.  Void took his kids to see Into the Spider-Verse, and the animation is simply spectacular. Beej was blown away by it, too, and the casting was spot-on. This is very likely the best Spider-Man movie. Ever. Period. The Harry Potter movies are always a Christmas treat for many people, so Beej and his wife have been firing up the ole Blurays. Beej has thoughts on the directors and how they change.
