Synopsis

Being an adult is hard. So is being a geek. And an adult geek? Well, that's where we come in. We're Beej and Void, and we've got more than a little experience in that area. We are life-long geeks and have managed to bring our geekery with us into adulthood and still be somewhat functional adults--you know, with families and jobs and that sort of thing. We don't do toxic, and we don't do nerdrage. Our views on geekdom are positive and optimistic, and we believe that the most important part of being a geek is the people you get to geek out with.Tightly focused discussions on specific topics drive the show. Striving to illustrate that it is entirely possible to be mega-geeks and responsible adults, we want to be your friend and create and open and positive geek community for everyone. We started this podcast because we really want there to be a safe, welcoming, positive geek community for everyone. We want to talk about stuff we love, make friends, and most importantly, make sure that everyone feels appreciated and that there's a place for them. So whether your love is video games, comic books, movies, TV, fitness, computers and tech, or whatever else...come geek out with us. Let's be friends.

  • S3E50 - Smash Bros - “The Smashiest Smash”

    20/12/2018 Duration: 41min

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate In this episode: Void and Beej have very different opinions of Smash Bros and it all comes out in this episode. Do we Smash each other? Or our expectations?  Super Smash Bros Ultimate on Nintendo Switch is the smashiest Smash that ever smashed a smash. It’s a really good version of the game and it’s already my favorite Mostly it’s great because everything (and everyone) is here from older versions Plus the single player is the most built out that it’s ever been with both Classic and World of Light modes. Small tweaks Brought back mid-air dodges You can see the bounds of the level when you’re off the screen Defense is less effective which speeds up the game The game is faster in general than the last two have been (Wii U/3DS & Brawl) If you  missed getting to experience all the DLC for the Wii U version, it’s all in Ultimate on day 1. Mostly it’s an extremely refined and iterated version of the last Smash for the Wii U Our histories with Smash Bros are entirely too long an

  • S3E49 - Year-End Geekery - “The most delightful sandwich I’ve eaten in years”

    13/12/2018 Duration: 56min

Year-End Geekery In this episode: Void and Beej catch up on things that need to be said before the end of the year. The end of the year is hectic for everyone, and we have a lot of stuff that needs to be talked about before Season 4 of the podcast rolls out. Beej's stuff: BJ ate a really good sandwich… like… really good. Holy moly. The Dragon Prince Frame-rate thing is interesting. Rayla’s Scottish accent seemed so fake, but the actress is Scottish Reminds me of Ni No Kuni 2 because it’s a pseudo-lighthearted fantasy Season 2 was greenlit. Yay! Overwatch New Symmetra. Again, holy moly. So much goodness. Legends of Aria - https://www.legendsofaria.com Formerly Shards Online Early Access right now Pretty much is old-school UO. 30 bucks for the initial buy-in. Steam in January. Fully supports player mods and servers Ralph Breaks the Internet Not quite as good as the first one. But still really fun. The Disney princesses were by far the highlight Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 2 Just a good show, ya

  • S3E48 - Best RPG Video Games for Beginners - “So interesting but so intimidating”

    06/12/2018 Duration: 47min

Best RPG Video Games for Newbies and Beginners In this episode: We got asked on Twitter where the best place to begin with RPGs would be. Between Western RPGs like Skyrim and the jRPG genre like Final Fantasy, we thought this would make a great topic for a cast. Starting RPGs can be intimidating because they're typically dozens of hours long, with lots of mechanics and intricate battle and progression systems.  We wanted to break it down so that you knew there are easily accessible options out there if you want to give the genre a try. Like Final Fantasy X and Dragon Quest XIII. We even talk about how Pokemon (specifically Let's Go! Eevee is a great starting point for everyone). We don't really cover action RPGs in this (Kingdom Hearts, Zelda, etc.) because we feel as though they deserve an episode all on their own. However, Kingdom Hearts is a great place to start, as is Breath of the Wild. If you've never tried an RPG before and want to just get into the genre without worrying about a lot of baggage, give

  • S3E47 - Listener Q&A 2018 - “Like Speed Dating For Nerds”

    29/11/2018 Duration: 49min

Listener Q&A 2018 In this episode: Every so often, we ask you -- our lovely listeners -- to send in any questions you want us to answer on any topic whatsoever. And we do our very best to answer them. You never fail to disappoint, either. We had to structure this episode differently than usual because we had so many, and we wanted to make sure we could answer each and every one. From work/live balance to how to get into Star Wars, your questions were incredibly fun to answer. We got to talk about headphones and video games and children and comic books and even write our own wishful-thinking synopsis of Star Wars Episode IX. We do these episodes every so often, so make sure that you keep sending in the questions on Slack, Discord, or Twitter. Or email us! Whatever works. We will keep track of them for the next Q&A episode. Many thanks to the Venerated Questioners, without whom we would not be able to create such delightful audio broadcasts.  Thanks for sending questions podcaster at large Rob (previou

  • S3E46 - The Phantom Geekery - “My Eevee VeeVee”

    22/11/2018 Duration: 59min

The Phantom Geekery In this episode: Void and Beej catch up on the last few weeks. This is the time of year where adult responsibilities are often met with germ bombs. So between being sick and work and everything else, we are double recording a lot. In the between time, we do a lot of geeky stuff to ease our minds and chill. And this time, we had a to catch up on. From Double Dare Live to She-Ra, Beej was swamped lately. He also got a new computer, played Fallout 76, Overwatch, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2.  He also watched a bunch of shows like She-Ra, Voltron, and Adam Ruins Everything. And Void...well, we don't know how he gets so much time. He rocked out Gamefly until next year, actually found a gam ehe wanted to buy (gasp!) and sampled a bunch of shows but only ended up sticking with Castlevania season 2.  He also played more Red Dead Redemption 2, Fallout 76, more Draglia lost, and is loving Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee! Geek Offer of the Week patreon.com/geektogeekcast Weekly Geekery It's all geekery! AH

  • S3E45 - Fallout 76, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Multiplayer Gaming - “Fallout With Friends”

    15/11/2018 Duration: 55min

Fallout 76 & Multiplayer Gaming In this episode: Void has been playing Fallout 76, Red Dead Redemption, and Draglia Lost which has gotten him thinking about where we both stand with multiplayer games at the moment.  We dig in about what’s working for us and what’s not. We are both in a very similar place in terms of not wanting to devote a ton of time to them for no reward, but the way we want to dig in on that is different. Beej is into the more asynchronous multiplayer games right now, while Void looks at Dragalia Lost as a perfect casual filler because you get real-time interaction by killing raid bosses. RDR2 is a fun experiment, but Void wanted a Wild West Horsey Game and has instead been given a Work Your Way East Oops Now You Are In New Orleans Horsey Game. It is a fantastic technological achievement, but Void wonders if the game may be better multiplayer because the world is so interesting, but the story is going in a direction he's not happy with. Additionally, Fallout:76 has some good ideas and

  • S3E44 - Marvel’s Spider-Man Heist DLC - “Relationship DLC”

    08/11/2018 Duration: 42min

Marvel's Spider-Man Heist DLC In this episode: Spider-Man's first DLC pack was released on the PS4, and even though Beej hasn't finished the game yet, he had to hear about what Void thought about it. We discuss how the game is fantastic for its action, but also works as a character piece because it makes you feel for these people. In the original game, you really care about MJ and May and Peter and others. In The Heist, Felicia Hardy makes her first appearance and even though there's a lot of good Spidey-action, the story is focused around her and Peter's relationship. Remember, too, that the Spider-Man PS4 DLC does take place after the events of the main story. However, you don't have to complete the main game to play it. So if you want to jump in and get your Black Cat on without powering through the major narrative. They connect, yes, but not to the point where it's major spoilers or the cause of major confusion (Major Confusion, #salute). Oh, and they put the PS4 Spider-Man into the comics already. Yep,

  • S3E43 - Red Dead Redemption 2 - “Accidentally Punch Your Horse”

    01/11/2018 Duration: 36min

Red Dead Redemption 2 In this episode: Void talks about initial impressions of Red Dead Redemption 2! Weekly Geekery BJ had life happen but was able to record some stand-alone geekery anyway!  He talks about Marvel’s Spider-Man, Daredevil Season 3, Curious Creations of Christine McConnell, his Kingdom Hearts collection, and Marvel Unlimited. Void played The Messenger and finished up Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. • S3E42 - Assassin’s Creed Odyssey - “No assassins and no creed”

    25/10/2018 Duration: 01h22s

Assassin's Creed Odyssey In this episode: Void has been playing Assassin’s Creed Odyssey for a few weeks and Beej picks his brain about it and the future of the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Weekly Geekery BJ watched Jigsaw, is playing 5v5 arena games on his phone, and got super into Marvel stuff this week with Spider-verse, Iron Fist Season 1, and Daredevil Season 3. Void listened to the audiobook of Smoke and Iron as well as The Consuming Fire.  He also tried out the Game of Thrones version of Reigns and started geeking out about Screen Time in iOS 12. • S3E41 - iPhone Xs and Xs Max - “Poo Emoji Facial Expressions”

    18/10/2018 Duration: 01h03min

iPhone Xs and Xs Max In this episode: We both got new phones in the same week so we need to talk about them. Void hadn’t upgraded his phone in 4 and a half years, so it was definitely time! Beej, on the other hand, likes new shinies and technology and upgrades pretty often.  Beej and his wife got new phones, too, just like Void and his wife did. Which phones they got were swapped, too. Weird. While this is a discussion on new phones and technology, we talk about the differences in current mobile operating systems, Android vs iOS, and even why we are drawn to certain kinds of devices. It's interesting to see the features that draw us both to the same kinds of phones because they're pretty different in terms of use, but we also overlap in them adding to the overall whole of the device. • S3E40 - The Geekery Awakens - “The show is non-stop”

    11/10/2018 Duration: 01h06min

The Geekery Awakens In this episode: This week was all about the Geekery Catch-Up. Since Beej went out of the country a few weeks ago, we had to record two episodes the week before, and he had internet issues the week after. So there was a good amount of time there for geekery to accumulate. We wanted to do one, big episode about it because not only was there so much of it, but we had so much to say about it. From books and audiobooks and video games and movies and Halloween cooking shows and gacha games, Nintendo games...we have a ton to talk about. We even go on some tangents (MoviePass! *shakes fist angrily in the air*, the future of the Netflix MCU: thoughts?) All in all, it's a great episode full of cool stuff. Oh, and by the way, we need questions for our semi-annual Q&A episode, so if you have a question of any sort, tweet at us, email us, throw it toward us on Slack, Discord, or Reddit...wherever. We wanna answer what you want to ask! Geek Offer of the Week patreon.com/geektogeekcast Weekly Geek

  • S3E39 - International Travel Happytime! - “2-meter paella pan”

    04/10/2018 Duration: 54min

Overseas Travel In this episode: This week we discuss Beej’s recent trip to Barcelona and some of Void’s past travels. We talk about how traveling internationally makes us think about all of the stuff we take for granted in our own lives. Such as having so much space in America, Beej living beside cows, Void being able to visit Canada easily, and much more. Being able to travel internationally is great to be able to have discussions with people from different cultures and backgrounds, which helps us learn and expand the context in which we live our lives. Beej wasn't aware of the delicate political balance in Barcelona right now. Void wants to travel more, but needs to wait until his kids are older. There is also a discussion about how when you travel, it's easy to figure out where you belong and whether you want to live elsewhere. For Void, travel appeals a lot, but he doesn't want to live anywhere and raise a family other than MN. For Beej, he's open to the possibility, but it will definitely not be Barcel

  • S3E38 - Minicast - “Sometimes the internet breaks”

    27/09/2018 Duration: 12min

  • S3E37 - Tabletop RPGs - “Imagination Adventure Calvinball”

    20/09/2018 Duration: 59min

Tabletop RPGs In this episode: This week we discuss where we currently stand with tabletop RPGs.  Beej got a recent chance to start up a regular group again and accidentally fell into the GM role.  Void is super interested in the possibilities of tabletop gaming and has tried some home brew options. Weekly Geekery BJ cancelled WoW but picked up SWTOR again and dove deep into other Star Wars stuff like Galaxy of Heroes, the Order 66 Podcast, Legends of the Galaxy, the Rebels sourcebook, and the Ahsoka novel. Void is probably still obsessed with Spider-Man, although it’s impossible to know with this time-shifted episode.  He also watched some WWII movies, Oceans 8, got around to trying the Megaman 11 demo, and finally got his hands on the early access version of the Lord of the Rings Living Card Game (or LotR LCG if you prefer). Marvel’s Spider-Man on PS4 Instead of typical show notes, here are the lyrics to the Spider-Man theme song from the '60s and a link to the song itself. 06/09/2018 Duration: 38min

Gaming at Work In this episode: We talk about gaming and geeking out at work!  And Toots! Weekly Geekery Beej got around to watching The Defenders and liked it more than he thought he would. Void started watching shows and movies around World War II, killed some time playing MergePlane, and is experimenting with Mastodon. • S3E34 - What's an Evergreen game? - “In the woods with worms”

    30/08/2018 Duration: 52min

This week we discuss the current state of evergreen games and how they relate to games we replay. What makes a game evergreen compared to one that you revisit? The difference comes in pretty similarly for both of us. We tend to look at evergreen games in a way that doesn't have a definite end, but even still, there are games that we approach over and over again for finite content packs that we consider evergreen. There are different genres that we feel fit the evergreen mold more than others, too! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/geektogeekcast/support

  • S3E33 - Personality Tests - “I am very good at doody”

    23/08/2018 Duration: 48min

We dive into personality tests because Void geeks out about them! From the early days of DISC tests to the ever-popular Meyers-Briggs, we discuss how each of these tests work and why we find them fascinating. But what good are personality tests? Aside from allowing you to do a lot of navel-gazing, you can use personality tests to hold a mirror up to yourself and actually find actionable points that can improve your personal life. It's happened to both of us, so it can happen for you, too! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/geektogeekcast/support

  • S3E32 - Re-watching, Re-reading, Re-playing - “I don’t browse for keyboards at Target”

    16/08/2018 Duration: 01h34s

We explore when and why we choose to re-experience pieces of media. We may actually do this differently than a lot of people, so we wanted to talk about it and see what makes something worth going back to. Void will use media to specifically direct his mood so that he can sit in a particular mindset, while Beej uses them cathartically and instead of sitting it in them like Void and becoming contemplative about them, he comes out the other side feeling refreshed and relaxed. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/geektogeekcast/support
