  • Lisa Strawn comments on Affirmation

    26/02/2018 Duration: 01min

Ms. Shakur's words are very graphic and hits on every emotion. To me, life is affirmation: how we are born and raised, and what our eyes see and our hearts find is amazing. The happiness and sadness of daily life and how the sun brings light to such a dark world, how we are bound together as people who say what we feel are judged and set free all in one motion. A wall is just a wall, and as she said, it can be brought down. But it's for us to find our path in loving one another and growing together, instead of being lost. Anyone, including myself, can and will find their way to port. But only if you allow yourself to know the difference of where you've been and where you are going. Our lives are cut shorter by the simplest, mindless racism, violence, and phobias we have about what we fear. Our fear should be pride. If we would all be proud of life, then we could love and have more tolerance and empathy for each other. Until they happen, we will continue to be lost ships. We must believe in light and each othe

Lisa Strawn, CMF Vacaville, I'm reading "Affirmation" by Assata Shakur. I believe in living.I believe in the spectrumof Beta days and Gamma people.I believe in sunshine. In windmills and waterfalls, tricycles and rocking chairs. And I believe that seeds grow into sprouts. And sprouts grow into trees.I believe in the magic of the hands. And in the wisdom of the eyes.I believe in rain and tears. And in the blood of infinity. I believe in life. And i have seen the death parademarch through the torso of the earth, sculpting mud bodies in its path.I have seen the destruction of the daylight, and seen bloodthirsty maggotsprayed to and saluted. I have seen the kind become the blindand the blind become the bindin one easy lesson.I have walked on cut glass.I have eaten crow and blunder breadand breathed the stench of indifference. I have been locked by the lawless.Handcuffed by the haters.Gagged by the greedy. And, if I know any thing at all,it’s that a wall is just a walland nothing more at all.It can be broken down. I believe

  • Sundiata Acoli comments on Affirmations

"What 'Affirmation' means to me," by Sundiata Acoli. "Affirmation" is a political artistic masterpiece that continues to inspire and astound me at every turn. I think it ranks among the greatest liberation classics as Claude McKay's "If We Must Die," Che Guevera's commentary on love and struggle, [inaudible] Davis's eulogy for Malcolm X, and Marcus Mosiah Garvey's "If I Die in Atlanta." The latter narratives were composed by men, most of whom were speaking on matters related to death. Assata is a woman, her affirmation took a different path. It's focused is living, in beliefs. Thus "Affirmation" opening line is "I believe in living." Followed by litany of activities that inspired to believe in better days ahead, to believe in the sun, wind, and water, to sustain as a life belonging to everyone, young and old alike, to believe in the dialectics of seeds growing into trees and the union of opposites, such as tears of pain turning into the joy of rains that bring a bountiful harvest. Again, complete the eternal

This is Terri Harper from Muncy, and today's piece is untitled. In this socioeconomic climate, many of us incarcerated women have had the, "I got to take care of me and mine" attitude. It has led many to extremes of the worst kind and ultimately could be deemed the reason for some people's incarceration. Let's be clear. Incarceration is the result of action and/or inaction. The thoughts and rationale behind such are often seen as excuses to point the finger at anyone or anything except self.  I cannot and will not do so, as I accept that my incarceration was a result of the wrong choices over a small period of time that became what has defined my life's path for close to three decades. I most certainly was of the mindset to take care of me and mine. However, too much of that mental energy was a mirror image on what I felt I needed to measure up to. In actuality, I only needed to love, look inward, and see me.  How many of you have dealt with not seeing yourself, living a life outside what you imagine living,

In most states in America, there's parole eligibility for people with a life sentence, but not in Pennsylvania. However, the remedy for Pennsylvania is a legislative bill in order to be in lockstep with the current era. Therein to this end, the court of public opinion must be educated through the schemes of why a segment of the 5,000 prisoners with life sentences in Pennsylvania are prisoners. Some because of all-white juries, which is a form of high-tech execution. *SCROLL DOWN FOR AUDIO* DAYS OF CHAOS - NIGHTS OF MADNESS[col. writ. 1/21/18] © ’18 Mumia Abu-Jamal Ask yourself one question: What have you seen in the last year in America? Unless you’ve been asleep, you’ve seen pure, unadulterated chaos in government.Government - not of action - but of reaction. Government by emotion, roiling from one extreme to the next. Government - loud - and wrong. The nation’s chief executive is, according to his own cabinet members (!), either an idiot or a moron. (take your pick) Loud, bellicose, uninformed, opinionated, crass, rude - and, yes, nasty. If you’re in your 50s, I’d bet you’ve never seen anything like it. A bull is loose in a china shop, wrecking everything within reach. The world looks on, with alarm; and a sense - a growing sense, that the American Empire is moving into its last days. A paranoid president knows nothing, except how to transform allies into enemies. The stock market is racing, yes - but can you not smell a bubble about to burst? Washington is in the grip

  • Honor In Ancestry (3:13) Terri Harper

    22/01/2018 Duration: 03min

This piece is called "Honor in Ancestry." We are all told to respect our elders, and if led down the path completely, we learned to hold our elders and ancestors to the highest degree in a scene. Growing up, I heard hundreds of stories while sitting in a rocking chair, some would have thought that I was spending quality time with one of my elders. Truth be told, I was plotting on the cookie jar. Still, lessons were learned. My sense of family, understanding of struggle, and thirst for knowledge were all born in that chair. To be in the presence of one born in 1889 was unfathomable, yet there she was. To look at a beautiful, strong, sensitive person who'd worked fields overcome blindness and slurs and didn't rest on the power of her nearly Caucasian skin complexion, and know that I was of her blood filled me with fortitude and sent me off to investigate life. Did I always follow my first instinct or completely listened to heated warnings? Absolutely not, but at least I was blessed to have received them. Now a
