Introduction... On this week's episode of the Lunch and Learn with Dr. Berry, we have a three time returning guest to the show, Maria Davis-Pierre to talk about Autism Awareness month and why she decided to take her passion for Autism and help black families. April is the month where we highlight Autism Awareness nationally and and as a father of an autistic child it hit closer to home the importance of knowing, diagnosing and early intervention. On this episode we talk about the importance of early intervention, growing up as an autism parent and why she decided to focus on black families. 1. Is Autism awareness month needed? Like with most things in healthcare early intervention is key. I remember when my daughter was first diagnosed how much work my wife had to put in to practically beg for services to be started. Because she was considered too young for the diagnosis we had to go through much more hurdles to get the care we need. The early intervention has been nothing short of life saving when I think ab

It has allowed the conversation of health to be something that everyone can have

Introduction... On this week's episode of the Lunch and Learn with Dr. Berry we celebrate two accomplishments. Our 100th episode and a feature with the Culinary Doctor. The 100th episode here on the podcast is a milestone that we can not overlook. On the episode Dr. Lauren Powell goes through her jo

  • LLP099: What is a Hospitalist? (Why are they important)

    13/03/2019 Duration: 24min

Introduction... On this week's episode of the Lunch and Learn with Dr. Berry I talk about the important role of a hospital physician better known as the hospitalist. When I made the transition from primarily an outpatient physician to an inpatient one I had to spend a lot of time explaining to my people exactly what my new job title was. I know you are aware that when you go to the hospital that someone is assigned to take care of you but there is this assumption that those doctors spend a portion of their day in the hospital and a portion outside of it. It has not been a long time since we started having physicians who dedicated themselves to a life of working in the hospital.   1. Why is a hospitalist important ? As a hospitalist you serve on the front line Which drug prices rise many people have to make these life or death decisions on a daily basis. Medication compliance because an issue and if you are someone who is trying to Empower Themselves For Better Health than it would impossible doing so without

  • LLP098: What Rising Drug Prices and Patient Care Have In Common

    27/02/2019 Duration: 32min

Introduction... On this week's episode of the Lunch and Learn with Dr. Berry we discuss rising drug prices, an unfortunate but common practice in the health industry. Often when we talk about price gouging we tend to hear about unlawful business owners preying on those in need in times of great difficulty. Probably the most common time is during natural disasters where all of the sudden gas stations start charging $20 for a case of water because the supplies are low. On this episode I am going to talk about rising drug prices and what the drug companies do to families on a daily basis. 1. Whats the big deal with rising drug prices? As a former outpatient physician I learned very quickly which medicines my patients could afford and which they couldn't. It got to the point where I didn't even suggest medications because I knew it would mean that my patient would have to choose between getting dinner and filling a prescription. Which drug prices rise many people have to make these life or death decisions on a

  • LLP097: Racial Disparities In Cancer Not Even Yet, But Getting Better

    19/02/2019 Duration: 23min

Introduction... On this week's episode of the Lunch and Learn with Dr. Berry we discuss recent findings from the American Cancer Society which discussed the "improvement" in racial disparities in regards to cancer. The study highlights what drove this improvement & what still needs to be done for better result. Of course you will hear my thoughts on the matter as an African American physician. 1. Is this a good thing? Whenever you have a study that says that something like cancer rates are improving you have to acknowledge the positive benefits from it. The biggest one is that if less people are being diagnosed with cancer than less people are dying form it. And with cancer being the number 2 cause of death in the US (see episode 96 for the number 1) its great to see less people affected. 2. So why we shouldn't jump for joy Probably the biggest reason why we should not go screaming from the roof tops the amazing effort that has taken place to get these improved numbers is the fact that they were so bad in

  • LLP096: Why 121 Million Are Affected by Heart Disease

    12/02/2019 Duration: 31min

Introduction... On this week's episode of the Lunch and Learn with Dr. Berry we provided a well needed update on the number one killer in the world but also the number one killer here in the US which is heart disease. Last year we had Dr. Mike discuss the importance of staying heart healthy but for reasons some that you can control & some that you can't this hasn't been the case. 1. Who can't relate? We have tons of new information associated with heart disease and because of it's prevalence we are finding more relationships and associations with almost every field of medicine to study. There are very few medical specialities that get to avoid the affects that heart disease has had on this country. 2. Just who is to blame? On the episode we are going to talk about guideline changes that may have played a role in over 121 million people suffer from heart disease. The American Heart Association offers its reasons but one that is telling is that one that me and Dr. Ducatel actually predicated would happen in

  • LLP095: Can you die from Pneumonia?

    30/01/2019 Duration: 26min

Introduction... On this week's episode of the Lunch and Learn with Dr. Berry we are going to discuss the topic of Pneumonia. A topic that has gotten a lot of publicity of late as news that Kim Porter's , former model, actor and ex-wife of Sean "Diddy" Combs death was ruled due to natural causes from Pneumonia. What was interesting to me was the social media reaction that someone so young could die from something like pneumonia. Not very often you see one of the top ten causes of death worldwide being reduced to such a small stature but there it was so I decided to bring this episode to you front and center and maybe get a little appreciation of how deadly pneumonia can be. Questions we hope to answer... How can Pneumonia kill you? What are the causes of death from Pneumonia? How long can you live with Pneumonia? How long does it take to recover? What are some interesting facts about Pneumonia? Is there a way to prevent Pneumonia? Listen on Apple Podcast, Google Play, Stitcher, Soundcloud, iHeartRadio, Spotify
