On the 16th episode of Piecing It Together, co-host Josh Bell and I discuss American Animals. It's a true story that's so crazy they had to make a point to tell us in the beginning that it's not "based on a true story," but it "is a true story." From director Bart Layton, the story focuses on a group of four guys, led by Warren (Evan Peters) and Spencer (Barry Keoghan), who bored with their mundane existences decide to try to rob priceless books from a museum to sell on the black market. Yes it really happened, and yes it goes horribly wrong. The movie blends the lines between cinema and reality by also including documentary style interviews with the real guys, as well as including them in scenes with their actor counterparts. On this special episode of Piecing It Together, I interview filmmaker Joe Lujan and actress/radio personality Corey Taylor, the organizers of this year's Las Vegas 48 Hour Film Project. The 48 Hour Film Project is an event that happens in cities all over the world where teams of filmmakers are tasked with a specific set of instructions and have to make an entire short film in 48 hours. On the 14th episode of Piecing It Together, returning co-host Kris Krainock and discuss two movies (a first for this show) that not only happen to be two of the best movies of the year so far, but they both share a very important puzzle piece in the classic film Taxi Driver. First Reformed was written & directed by Paul Schrader (who of course also wrote Taxi Driver) and deals with a pastor played by Ethan Hawke who begins to spiral out of control from the pressure of trying to balance the political desires of the church and what he knows in his heart God would think is the right way to live in this world. You Were Never Really Here was written & directed by Lynne Ramsay and follows a man played by Joaquin Phoenix whose life has been defined by violence as he attempts to rescue a young girl from a life of sex trafficking while the effects of all that violence begin to take a toll on him. Aside from Taxi Driver, other puzzle pieces include Diary of a Country Priest, mother!, A History of Violence
