He later graduated from Bluefield State College with a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice in 1981. Following a short career in local law enforcement, he enrolled in the DEA's training program. His first assignment was in Miami, where he worked with Kevin Brady, where they were mostly going after young marijuana users. Following the death of Brady at the hands of La Quica during a failed sting against Hermann Zapata. Murphy then accepted a transfer to Bogota. The former DEA agent then became involved in the successful manhunt for narcotics kingpin Pablo Escobar, with Javier Peña. Their story has formed part of the backbone for the Netflix series Narcos. When he was hired as a Deputy Sheriff by the Webb County Sheriff’s office in Laredo. Javier would dedicate seven years of his life there. Peña began working for the DEA in 1984 where he was assigned as a special agent for the Austin, Texas office, where he worked until 1988. By 1988, the international cocaine trade had begun to explode, and Peña then volunteered for a new post in Bogota, Colombia. He was sent there along with agent Stephen Murphy. The infamous DEA duo then began unearthing many secrets about how Pablo and the Medellin Cartel really operated.
