Philosopher Coaches: Vince Lombardi
27/09/2020 Duration: 30minIn the first of what is set to be a fascinating dive into the philosophies of some of the world's greatest and most legendary coaches, Rob discusses the peerless Vince Lombardi, regarded by many to be the greatest coaches and leaders in the history of American sports. KEY TAKEAWAYSIt is as important to ensure that our character is in as good shape as our skill set. We need to lead by example in not just what we can do, but how we do it. Anyone who is regarded as a great coach, is more than likely blessed with not just technical prowess, but also a philosopher of life, and a student of the human psyche. If we have nothing to strive for, and if we are not attempting to be the best version of ourselves, then we are missing a vital component in self-development. Progress should be measured in effort and not results. It is far better to suffer a valiant defeat than it is to score a lucky victory. BEST MOMENTS‘We're only ready for what we're ready for, at the time we're ready for it'&

The Wisdom Of Chris Hughton
06/09/2020 Duration: 25minThis week, Rob draws from the wisdom of famed Premier League manager and coach, Chris Hughton, the man who oversaw the fortunes of such clubs as Newcastle United, Norwich City, and Brighton & Hove Albion. It's a discussion that takes in such lessons as dealing with adversity, how instruction comes from every direction, and the importance of responding instead of reacting. KEY TAKEAWAYSAt a young age, even the most minor of setbacks can derail our faith and self-belief. We must instead see it as a challenge, and respond accordingly in order to overcome. Challenges are a sign that you need to grow or develop in some way. It is up to us to recognise the element requiring work, and grow stronger through it. The people around us provide lessons continually. Even those who express a negative influence teach us in some way - by showing us the path not to take. We are eternal students. By embracing our development with humility, we continue on the road to growth, no matter how far down th

A Coach’s Responsibility To The Next Generation – with Hilton Slack
30/08/2020 Duration: 01h16minRob talks to swimming coach, Hilton Slack, one of the most successful in his pursuit, about the challenges of coaching and leadership, the responsibility we have to the generation of tomorrow, and the many lessons learned during his long and illustrious career. KEY TAKEAWAYSMany coaches begin by splitting their time during the day, working a full-time job in the daytime, and coaching in the evenings. It's a great way of getting coaching time under the belt before taking it up professionally. Coaching is about displaying your belief in someone. It involves long term development, and the process of coaching someone to their best current ability, then gradually pushing them further. Coaches starting out are not doing it for the salary, which can be pitifully small at the outset. They do it for the love of the sport, and because of a desire to shape and mould the skills and lives of others. Young people are so impressionable. The responsibility we have as shapers of youth is critical. Imprinti

Captain Class
09/08/2020 Duration: 34minThis week, Rob talks about an inspiring work of literature, 'The Captain Class: The Hidden Force Behind The World's Greatest Teams' by Sam Walker; a work that sells itself on the proposition that “A great leader is not what you think" KEY TAKEAWAYSTeams don't find success through the efforts of one person. But sometimes one person can act as the “magic ingredient” that causes a team to coalesce into its finest form. This is the “captain class” theory. It is an interesting phenomenon, that those fitting the criteria of the “captain theory” are not necessarily the best players. It is more about their effect than their talent. The true “captain class” are the ones who play on the boundaries, and who push others in creative, supportive ways. There is no substitute for support. Those who provide the hidden leadership are the ones who “box ears and wipe noses"BEST MOMENTS‘If anything's worth doing, it's worth doing well' ‘It's the cultu

KEY TAKEAWAYSA good coach is one who accepts the wisdom of those who teach, and who instils a sense of respect in those who learn.Preparation is a long term game. Fans think that the work only begins shortly before a match, but the great coaches know that growth is a long term pursuit.Football is a game, and a passion, that transcends the barrier of sex. Women's football is as thrilling and as passionate as men's, and Ed is a pioneer in making sure that it is as recognised as its counterpart.Trophies are the aim for the club itself, but when we as coaches look back upon our careers, it is the people and the moments of inspiration that we treasure.BEST MOMENTS'The papers summed it up as “The Tom
