As a latchkey kid, she learned from an early age that it was a lot about survival and that you often did not have many options in life. Julie was fortunate to have had a strong influence from great teachers who "got her." They saw something in her that she didn't know she had. One particularly influential teacher helped her build self-confidence. This allowed her to attend college and become the first person in her family to earn a degree.  While raising her daughter Nikki, she met her husband Mike in Mexico, and after a six-month courtship, they married.
