How Long (6:14) Charles Diggs
26/12/2018 Duration: 06minOkay, good evening. My name is Charles Kareem Diggs. I'm calling from Pennsylvania, uh, state prison, a Phoenix, and the title of my essay this evening is "How Long?"What did Dr. Martin Luther King mean when he said he could not wait any longer for change? In 1865, slavery was abolished; 13th amendment and the 14th amendment adopted; in 1868, conferred citizenship on African Americans; wiping out the stain of Dred Scott decision. The undemocratic system lasted until the 1960s; the African American population, regardless of popular belief, that slaves were freed as a result of the civil war and emancipation proclamation; is not totally accurate. The government instituted Jim Crow, laws, rules, and regulations—confined over 4 million Africans to terror, oppression, violence, and early death. Some historians said it was much worse than plantation slavery. The history is necessary before the American people can have an honest discussion of massive imprisonment of American blacks. Their energy that is being used t

UFD (2:02) Dontie Mitchell
24/12/2018 Duration: 02minHello. My name is Dontie S. Mitchell reporting from Great Meadow Correctional Facility. I'm the founder of UFD, which stands for the Ujamaa Fraternal Dynasty. UFD is a mutual self-improvement fraternity that I use as a classroom to positively organize, motivate, inspire, educate young prisoners, and to steer them away from gangs, drugs, and violence. Because despite UFD's potential in countering gang violence and lowering prison recidivism, the Department of Corrections is not in official recognition and approval of UFD. They did so based on an outright lie and deliberate misinformation and too inconsequential reasons to question: Why I grew up into adulthood behind prison walls serving almost 22 years since I was 17 years old? Tomorrow is my 39th birthday. I tell you from experience that New York prisons are graduating young prisoners deeper into criminality, making them more corrupt and dangerous. This is because the Department of Corrections does not care about correcting criminal behavior. Just look at th

Your Word Should Be Your Bond (4:31) Omar Askia Ali
21/12/2018 Duration: 04min"Your word should be your bond." Whatever happens to a person's word being [inaudible]? It has been a shift in our culture and one's word [inaudible]. We share experiences with people for years, but when they are blessed to obtain freedom, they don't look back. While they were incrcerated with you, they cried on your shoulder and over the years, raked up all sorts of promises. Don't worry, brother, sister. When I get out, I'm going to look out. They often say, but once their feet touch the bricks, they conveniently forget, they forget the hands that were extended to them in their times of need, they forget that they gave their word. They forget to call their homies or so-called dog's attorney or to touch base with his or her family. They forget to drop a letter postcard, or even at Jpay, wth a brief message of support. They forget all about you, but as soon as they are back, you're their best friend. These are what you call fairweather friends or more appropriately, [inaudible]. These people have no sense of
