Talking With Burritos | Film And Media Entertainment

We recorded the very first episode of Talking With Burritos in February of 2014. Unbreakable was the movie subject and eating burritos was a delicious bad idea; it seems people don't enjoy hearing you trash paper wrappers and chew your food while on mic. Go figure. With the movie playing on the television, Josh, Adam, Chris and Jerry discussed Unbreakable scene by scene. We recorded for almost four hours and had a great time breaking down what is by far M. Night Shaymalan's best movie while building it up with the praise it rightly deserves. Our appreciation for this movie spurred the desire for us to bring our random work discussions to a shareable platform for people like us to enjoy and hopefully relate.  In this episode we go back and reminisce about how this podcast began and where it's going, and also why we chose to revisit M. Night Shaymalan's Unbreakable ever year until this podcast ends or we cease to exist.        

Ghostbusters isn't getting a sequel. Well, that's what the word is now based on projections that the remake film is likely to post a seventy million dollar loss. Could it have been a backlash from that awful first trailers, sexism, or is it a poorly made movie? In this episode, Chris and Jerry give their reaction to the movie while playing The Watchmen video game. It was an interesting endeavor that excited an fierce debate on whether Ghostbusters (2016) is a remake or a requel. As we look forward into the future and can clearly see our impending doom isn't it basic human curiosity to wonder how you might kill time during an apocalypse. In this episode Chris and Jerry delve into the subject as we ponder how we might spend or last days/months/years on earth.  What's the best apocalyptic scenario to endure? This Is The End, duh. Go Franco! And oh, yeah, that movie X-men Apocalypse.    X-Men Apocalypse   Did we enjoy the movie? At this point who the hell cares. X-men was just another character heavy movie by Bryan Singer that does very little to showcase the depth its characters and importance of the X-men to the Marvel Universe. To put it simply: keep it simple. Make a movie about the X-men and leave out the exposition. We’ve been there, done that, and now we’re just tired. Sure you can show us Jubilee in a cameo, but why should we care? You messed up Wolverine Origins and so why not throw in Weapon X. The summer is most notably an incredible time for Hollywood and the blockbuster movie; however, with the decline or of the marquee performer/(bankable) actor or franchise, this summer, as with the previous summer comes off as just meh on the Richter scale of expectation.  There are so many movies opening within a span of three months, so  there has to be one gem of a film that will shine bright among the dullness of the remake and sequel... right? Will it be X-men or Ghostbuster? Independence Day: Resurrection? What will be the movie to make this summer of movies worth the price of admission? In this episode we review Angry Birds, Nice Guys, and Neighbors 2 and we ponder the next couple of months in movies with the hopes of finding one film that will spark our interest and save this year of meh so far.

What if is a questionable phrase that implies regret. But what if the decision or act to which the what if applied isn't applicable to just regretting the decision that was made. Well in good ol' Hollywood there were some casting decisions made by the actor and/or the studio that was actually the best decision made at the time. Prince died years ago -- not in the literal sense obviously but in the sense that he grew old in a profession he loved and maintained a status quo without  to ever having to defend who he was and why he was great. His songs and attention to the craft of making music make him a modern day warrior amongst the one hit radio wonders, autotun-ers, and would be imitators.    For this podcast, I talk about Prince and frame him as an example of who a modern-day warrior exemplifies based on this idea I had for this episode that was probably not meant to be.    Old Men Die Young   This insightful phrase came to mind when I was thinking about a podcast episode that could include The Death of Wolverine and Old Man Logan comic books. It didn’t take long for me to discover that this term, Old Men Die Young is very vague and rather difficult to construct a narrative around that wouldn’t bore listeners (no hard feelings Chris). And so, I did what every inquisitive human would do and just Googled that phrase. Crossovers happen when two thing that exists in two different places crossover to the one or the other to form an unlikely relationship that may or may not blend well together. For example, take the Long Island ice tea, it's a crossover mix mashup of tequila, vodka, rum, something known as triple sec or gin --  every spirit you have in the liqueur cabinet-- with a splash of Coke. The recipe is a mess but somehow those ingredients blend together and taste like mamas sweet tea. Yeah, she was a drunk but damn was she fun before she fell off the wagon into that alligator infested pool of despair and liver failure. The Devils kool-aid I call it. Ever get in a boring discussion about marriage and wish there was something more to be said about matrimony that in some way relates to Shark Week? Well there is all that and then some in the context of the movie Open Water. Lost a sea, we watch as a couple struggle with the failure to communicate and how life is always better than being eaten by sharks. 

So many mixed feelings about this movie, Sucker Punch. Either you like it or you hate it. In this episode, we reached back in time for a discussion we had about an idea of rebooting no-so-good movies or movies with great potential that was poorly executed.  The podcast idea never can to fruition because it is basically it's own podcast and really would have misdirected the evolution of the show idea. Nevertheless, this was a good discussion   (one of my favorites) and just listening back to this really makes us want to form a show around this idea and really put effort into making it into something we can share. 

With the box office success of comes much fluctuated praise and misleading fervor totting this film as the movie that’s gonna breakdown the conventional norm of comic book movies and change the way Hollywood perceives R rated comic book adaptations. Why now? Because Deadpool has made graphic comic books seemingly profitable now. However, comic book movies have been in existence for a long time. Indeed! R - rated comic book movies have played on the big screen. Marvel has produced and released R -rated movies of it’s characters in the past, so whats the big whoop-dee-coo with Deadpool? Is it the dreamy Ryan Reynold? Cameos by the X-men? Valentine’s Day pandering? Okay, you can almost tack up it’s success to all of those things but being avant grade is not one of them. Here’s the rub, Deadpool, opened up at the right time: when we were as an audience where growing tired of the time.
