Designed to test you at your most vulnerable and push you beyond where you believe your limits lie, The defence of one's person or interests, especially through the use of physical force, which is permitted in certain cases as an answer to a charge of violent crime. • Martial arts and training time

    10/06/2018 Duration: 12min

In this podcast episode we talk about training times for the different aspects of training in the martial arts. We discuss competition, hobby and self protection training. I also go into a little rant about the politics within Hema so if you are not into that give this one a miss :) But within this podcast episode are some very good tips on training. Any martial artist worth his salt will try to create a reality-based approach over a traditional, fixed, static approach, which is desirable. But prepare to be ridiculed for it as this routinely happens to people advocating a reality-based approach. Such attempts will make enemies from the die-hard Left because facts beat feelings everytime, and in reality based martial arts, their is no room for feelings, only facts.People don’t like change. They don’t like having to adapt and refine and evolve. They often respond with hostility to those who challenge their echo chambers and question their “sacred traditions” in politics and the martial arts. Any kind of reali

  • Graham Butcher Interview - STAV

    01/04/2018 Duration: 31min

I was born in 1959 so I was the right age, early teens, when martial arts suddenly became very popular in the early 70s. Bruce Lee, Enter the Dragon and, well it made quite an impact at the time. I had the opportunity to learn Karate from the age of about 14 and I grabbed the chance. I am not athletic, I have always had slightly limited cardio vascular capacity, perfectly okay for everyday life but I can't run all that far or fast. Today I would probably be labelled dyspraxic (we just used to call it clumsy and thus useless at ball games). As a young child I was a little overweight and always seemed to be twisting an ankle or suffering from a stitch. So, I certainly wasn't competitive in sports even when I did take part. In martial arts training I found a way of developing physically at my own pace and according to my own needs. I found that I could effectively defend myself on the fairly rare occasions that it was necessary. I also discovered a sense of integration that did not seem to come from any other s

  • Martial Power

    25/03/2018 Duration: 10min

We have all seen martial arts demonstrations. A master squares off against his taller and heavier opponent, extending his arm until his fist stops a mere inch from the other man’s chest. Suddenly, the master’s fist slams forward with explosive force, throwing the opponent into the air. The foe lands in a pile 8 feet from where he stood. Nearby, another expert lets loose a full-throated kiai as he leaps up, kicks and shatters a board held high over his head. A third master smashes downward with a hammerfist, a stack of concrete blocks. What secrets do these experts share? What endows mere mortals with such seemingly superhuman abilities? Consciously or subconsciously, these people have mastered the martial sciences. The more you understand them, the more you will come to appreciate the martial arts. The martial arts are enormously popular, but what about the sciences? It may sound funny, but when you study the lives of masters of the past — people like you will discover they all were highly qualified martial s

  • Staying Safe (2)

    19/03/2018 Duration: 09min

In this episode we are looking at equiping our young people with the skills to survive the modern world through mental and physical training. Keeping children safe while out and about All children can be vulnerable sometimes, and as a parent it is only natural to worry about their safety. If you are worried, you can help to protect your young children and teens with these common-sense tips. Statistics show that crime against young children by strangers is rare. Even so, these seven tips can help protect your child: tell your child to avoid talking to people they don't know when you're not around make sure your child knows never to walk away with strangers make sure your child understands that they should always tell you if a stranger approaches, and never to keep this secret if your child is travelling alone, tell them to sit near other families on the train or bus if your child has to use a lift – tell them only to use lifts with friends, and not to feel worried about getting out if they are uncomfortable

  • Staying Safe

    15/03/2018 Duration: 06min

In today’s society, it is important for people to understand the meaning of staying alert.  Alert to predators of all types – kidnappers, stalkers, pedophiles, murderers, muggers – how to recognize them, how to outsmart them, and how to protect themselves. The newspapers and media are filled with horror stories from around the country and the people who commit these crimes don’t stand out from the rest of the crowd.  They look just like a neighbor, or a co-worker, or a friend.  And that is what is so deadly.  No one suspects what is going on in the mind of the predator. Listen to your instincts when you meet someone.  If they seem a little strange, perhaps a little too friendly, or you get the impression that they are hiding something, beware of confiding too much information about yourself or your family.  Be aware of this person if they seem to be loners; not many friends, they don’t have family ties, they don’t have steady jobs.  If they do have friends, pay attention to what type of people they associate

  • The Martial Artist

    13/03/2018 Duration: 07min

In an increasingly violent modern society, can a man who teaches physical combat be a positive role model? There is a seemingly obvious contradiction in studying a combat art and claiming to be a peace-loving individual but, just as the personalities and moral characters of builders, actors, footballers and politicians vary greatly, so too do those of martial artists and boxers. Much as the balletic grace of stylised movie martial arts – which can often be beautiful to watch – contradicts the bloody savagery of mixed martial arts contests, so too can the outside-the-ring gentleness of pugilists appear contrary to their chosen profession. Although martial arts were formulated as battlefield techniques and were honed in countless wars and violent upheavals, they also contain elements of philosophy and codes of conduct which provide a blueprint for a way of life and morality. The most obvious example of this would be China's famed Shaolin Temple warriors; the Buddhist monks who preached peace whilst training
