Nerd Heresy

We discuss a couple of superheroes that were very important to us as kids, Blankman and The Meteor Man. These are fun movies that we saw regularly when growing up, and decided to re-watch. Given the recent glut of superhero films that fall flat for us, we wondered if these hadn't aged well, but instead we found they were pretty fun, even now.

Strategy RPGs, like Final Fantasy Tactics or Disgaea, are the kind of things we've loved for a while, though we don't really care for the latter. We go over our history with the games, with a detour into names for various kinds of mecha.

El Aura is Bielinsky's second film, this time about a taxidermist with a disability who is obsessed with committing the perfect crime. He died a year after it came out. This film is beautiful, intricate, and forbidding, and we absolutely adore it.

Nueve Reinas is an amazingly well-constructed heist film. It concerns street criminals and low-level cons. We save the last part for Heist Spoilers, just in case someone wants to watch the movie fresh without the reveal. Watch this movie. You won't regret it.

Lupin the Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine is a fantastic character study Lupin's Irene Adler, and it gets pretty damn dark in places. We've sectioned this episode into spoilers so you can stop it and watch the show at any point. It starts getting darkest about halfway through, so if you want to stop at that point, it's a good plan. CW: child abuse, suicide.

Turn-A Gundam is a fantnastic show that gives us both what we love about Gundam: the consideration of human life annd everyday people. We discuss the first 25 episodes, loving the whole damn thing so far.

We finished Fate/Apocrypha, and it dropped the ball not only theologically, which is sad given how well-researched Fate usually is, but also in resolution and fights. It doesn't go well from here.

The Cat Returns was adorable when we saw it. We chat about last year's Ghibli fest, and what we're looking forward to this year.

Breaking In is a passable film about a mother saving her children in a reverse Panic Room situation, though we've mostly got a few issues with the Mexican in the movie.

Cage is fantastic in this film about a corrupt cop that gets everything he's worked for, a fantastic indictment of police, that only serves to show how other cop shows and films work.

Eega is a Telugu language romantic comedy about a man who is reincarnated into a fly to protect the woman who loved him. It is fantastic and hilarious, and we gush about it for an hour.

In the times before Homestuck's massive... whatever Homestuck is, webcomics were a more staid, newspapery medium that still had some of the mainstays of today. We discuss those, and some of what's held on. Also Kid Radd, the best sprite comic ever made.

The nerds discuss their experiences with the Ultima franchise, Richard Garriott, and the new Shroud of the Avatar. It's going to eat Andre's life soon enough. If you can find him in game, you are guaranteed a fish!

We watched the first season of Fate/Apocrypha, and we're interested in seeing where it goes, but we have our problems with it so far. We'd just rather not ever interact with anything to do with Jack the Ripper again.

The three movies of the original Mobile Suit Gundam are fantastic, and even though their pacing is weird, they give you a good grounding in the Universal Century. We adore all three together as a whole. This is the first in our Gundam Series.

In the year 3025, stompy mech robots walk multiple earths. We go through a quick history of Battletech, with quick overviews of the factions from our point of view. There's also a bit of time spent on the real-world development of the game, which has hit dozens of snags at every possible turn.

We take a moment to mourn Erin Popovich at the beginning and the end, may she rest in peace. Other than that, we discuss the Spurs, and how they're totally going to be eaten alive by the Warriors, and also Andre's awful playoff bracket.

Into the Breach is a difficult and fun puzzle game masquerading as a strategy-game. We love it.

Cyberpunk's a genre that's been coming back into fashion given our disappointing cyberpunk present, full of megacorporations and sketchy internet deals. 

Thanks to the women of Transmediacrity, Andre was finally drawn into Fate: Grand Order. Then Lupe was drawn in. Then more, and more. And now no night is complete without the sound of crit stars being gathered.
