  • Licence to Steal Your Face With Brett Veinotte: Sounds Like Liberty - Episode 33

    30/01/2019 Duration: 01h20min

In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie examine City Hall by Tenacious D. Is this the hit we needed but didn’t deserve? Is this the core of libertarian ideology in song-form? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMug1HsNoHM This week in I Heard This Happened: Garage Pop from Cali & a collection of sounds from North Carolina Power Chords by Mike Krol is the best guitar driven garage album I’ve heard in years with those overfuzzed riffs spinning around on the peripheral of the headphones. The album sounds like Built To Spill dipped in some Ben Kweller & OK GO, injected with some Superdrag then run through the machine that gave The Strokes that Lo-Fi sound. .It’s like he reaches in to my soul and pulls out all my teen angst from the 90s and sings it back to me in familiar melodies. My only issue with the record is that the lo-fi overdriven vocal holds the record back from its true potential, I think it limits the accessibility of these pop gems. http://mikekrol.bandcamp.com/album/power-chords Lizzie’s

  • The Law Ep 21, Loving v Virginia (1967)

    24/01/2019 Duration: 26min

In a unanimous decision, the US Supreme Court held that states could not deny the natural right to associate via marriage by using state violence to imprison those who wished to enter a politically disfavored relationship. This case shines a spotlight on the horrendous racism institutionalized in our government a mere 50 years ago. We are still working on it.

  • Not The Vampire Orgy You’re Looking For With Howie Snowden: Sounds Like Liberty - Episode 31

    23/01/2019 Duration: 01h29min

In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie examine Liberty & Justice by Agnostic Front. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ocw_s5tDNww&list=OLAK5uy_kpS6d8QgKOXsOQjbuiEarRsnzN1syLMAg This week in I Heard This Happened: djent from gay Paris & some girly Philly indie. Nicky’s album this week is Super 90 by Kadinja, This band from Paris, France has touches of VOLA, Twelve Foot Ninja, Plini, and Polyphia. They keep just enough of the metalcore roots to feel legitimately hard while washing it over in modern guitar prog. I’m not usually into the metal vocal this much but it’s surrounded by so much dissonant musicality and sing-along hooks it’s hard to look past it. Surprisingly textured for the genre, it’s still crazy techie but has nice little peepholes into genres from my youth. https://kadinja.bandcamp.com/album/super-90 Lizzie’s pick is Sunset Blush by Kississippi. This artist from Philadelphia, PA. It reminded Lizzie of Florence and the Machine with a little Death Cab and Best Coast. It’s so smooth

  • Smallfoot - The Last Nighters - Episode 55

    21/01/2019 Duration: 56min

The noble lie for the greater good. The all-purpose excuse for tyranny the world over. • The Law Ep 20, Kelo v City of New London

    17/01/2019 Duration: 27min

In a 5-4 decision, the SCOTUS declares that the state may use eminent domain under the Fifth Amendment’s Taking Clause because “economic development” is a “public use.” In other words, Josette Kelo and others could be forced out of their homes because the government wanted to use their property for commercial development. As Justice O’Connor’s dissent points out, this case effectively repealed the “public use” requirement of the Fifth Amendment.

  • Wrap Your Head Around This with Jacob Linzy: Sounds Like Liberty - Episode 31

    16/01/2019 Duration: 01h28min

In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie examine Pet by A Perfect Circle. It’s a uber-creepy slice of life inside the matrix https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lq4kdKNqEZA&index=22&list=OLAK5uy_liO60JcLLYbDaEe5JVBE8XB6eZquwbgu8 This week in I Heard This Happened: Not-Smiths & Synthpop. Nicky’s album this week is Tallies by Tallies, This band from Toronto sounds like the Smiths & The Sundays with hints of Best Coast & Belinda Carlisle through the Psychedelic Furs. I really don’t think they soaked this record in enough reverb, I can still pick out individual instruments. Every song is catchy with a sing-a-long hook. Sarah has an incredible cutsie belt, equal parts manic pixie & fierce yodel at times. Don’t tell Liz I may have a crush. The Music this really calls to mind is The Smiths because of that Jangly reverb laden guitar but it also has a more bombastic rhythm section than I think of when Morrissey & the gang come to mind. https://handdrawndracula.bandcamp.com/album/tallies Li

This series is really just a couple of great friends (Alexander & Zak) recording their notoriously random conversations in 360° video at some of the most beautiful places in Orange County. In this video kick back with us and take in the surroundings of Newport Harbor at dusk from Zak’s sail boat as the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade starts to roll through. Thanks in advance for putting up with the sub-par audio. These are yet still our humble beginnings in recording on-location content. If you enjoy this video please like and subscribe to The Agora on Youtube. We’ve got all kind of new content on the way. Something to add to the conversation? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Black Mirror: Bandersnatch - The Last Nighters - Episode 54

    14/01/2019 Duration: 46min

Time is a construct. Mirrors let you move through time. The government monitors people, they pay people to pretend to be your relatives and they put drugs in your food and they film you. There’s messages in every game. Like Pac-Man. Do you know what the PAC stands for? P-A-C: Program and Control. He's program and control man, it's a metaphor. He thinks he's got free will but really he's trapped in a maze, in a system, all he can do is consume, he's pursued by demons that are probably just in his own head, and even if he does manage to escape by slipping out one side of the maze, what happens? He comes right back in the other side. People think it's a happy game. I've set you free. Come back next week where we will finally have our episode on Smallfoot with special guest, Rocky Ferrenburg.

  • The Law Ep 19, Gideon v. Wainwright (1963) - SCOTUS says that the government can not cage you unless they provide you with an attorney.

    10/01/2019 Duration: 23min

Clarence Earl Gideon was charged with a felony in a Florida state court. He asked for an attorney but was denied under the then existing Florida law. Acting pro se, he was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison. The SCOTUS, in a unanimous ruling, declared that the state can not exercise its power to jail a criminal defendant unless it provides an attorney. The Sixth Amendment “right to counsel” is actually a limitation on government power. When he was retried, with a lawyer this time, he was acquitted after less than an hour of jury deliberation. • I’m Hungry, Let’s Eat With Dann Reid: Sounds Like Liberty - Episode 30

    09/01/2019 Duration: 01h13min

In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie examine Silent Running by Mike + The Mechanics. It’s everybody’s favorite sleeper anarchist anthem from the 80’s. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ep7W89I_V_g This week in I Heard This Happened: some Preo & Pop-Rock. Nicky’s album this week is Spending Eternity In A Japanese Convenience Store by Forests, The band hails from Singapore. So, I suppose it was bound to happen. Those techy Asian musicians were gonna smash Prog & emo together eventually. Frankly I’m glad. No genre picking. The record came out New years day. I would describe it as Chon meets Built To Spill meets Boys Night Out. The songs all have intricate & interesting parts but somehow it manages to be a singalong manufacturing device at the same time. Why do asian bands always seem to slay face? Is it genetic or just a function of the best stuff manages to make it here, the world may never know. , http://weareforests.bandcamp.com/album/spending-eternity-in-a-japanese-convenience-store Lizzie
